Nah he just won because of the sorry state of the US political system. First past the post, electoral colleges, only two major parties, etc. are all incredibly undemocratic and stupid.
The Electoral College was one piece of the puzzle.
Another was that only land-owning men used to vote - as they had an investment in the country. The idea that a crowd of vagabonds could come over from another land, and vote enmasse is entirely foreign to the Framer's conception of American government. They wanted maturity and responsibility in the voting, and love for the place and people they were voting on behalf of.
