Was the war necessary?
Was the American funding to Mujahideen necessary?
would a communist government in Afghanistan be better?
The government of Afghanistan wanted to be occupied by the USSR and had at first denied their request. The only reason the US supported rebels was to break the USSR's influence.
As far as I know.
Also it should be noted that the US created al-Qaeda by recruiting rebels from peaceful groups like the Taliban to attack the Soviet bases on the border forcing the Soviet forces to invade so they could make people more Anti-Communist, personally I wish people would not confuse al-Qaeda and the Taliban, al-Qaeda is US created and the Taliban are a group of people that have lived in the Afghan region for hundreds of years they also despised groups like al-Qaeda that advocated violence.
I wouldn't call Taliban peaceful anyway. They had to defend an invasion and so they did.
Well, most of the US funding went to the Northern alliance rebels who are still supporting US operations, not the southern Talibs.
Maybe peaceful back then, but not very peaceful anymore.
