Could be a gate to the old town?
It was actually the entrance to a medresa ( Muslim school )

I'd say it's Arabic.At least it looks like it...
I was thinking the same.
It may be the Ottoman style, since it seems that every Arabic region has it's own nitch. The Persians, for example, would build it slightly different.
It is Arabic, to be more precise Moorish architecture.
