the actual difference was when the russian soldiers saw the very great advantage between the american round which was the 5.45 round which was even more deadlier because the 7.62x39 round goes fast and straight through the targets body which means you need to be more accurate and it means you might miss organs which wasnt wanted in war so they saw m16 and mikail kalshnikov saw and experimented with the design it was so deadly bullet so he just made enhancements to the barrell to fit it into it and he didnt have to make many changes since the soviet bullet and the amrican bullet were very very similar in size so he just adobted it. for those that want to know why the 5.45 round was so deadly is because when it goes in the target it starts to go slower and tumble and move round in the body then coming out which increases the chances of hitting very soft tissue and organs so that why the ak-74 was adopted to all of its russian military since then :) i hope i was of help and the 74 is not newer for no reason then there wouldnt even be a point making it. and mikhail didnt want to use a m16 mechanism since at that time it was very unreliable and it was very unstable in conditions like in water areas or in deserts since dust and water will automatically destroy the gun. :) but the ak mechanism could be thrown in mud and water be shoved full of dust and it will fire like it should :)

Wrong.
The Ak47 replaced the AK74, which was only in use by Russian military for a year or two, IIRC.
