Well, they died from altitude sickness, not hunger. So as amusing as the reply is, I must point out how it's completely wrong.

Well I guess there is more iron in meat and iron is needed to transfer O2 in blood so in high attitude with less oxygen vegan had no chance. Troll physics(or biology?) dont be mad :-D
That could be true. Maybe they had some kind of iron deficiency and it worsened the effects of the altitude sickness, making it fatal.
