Liberalism goes on an independent axis that the left-right spectrum. The western world has liberal democracies, whether with liberal conservative governments or social democrat ones. Authoritarian and totalitarian regimes are not democracies and by definition the opposite of liberal forms of state. The US pretty much defined modern liberalism, at that.
Edit: well, I see the problem now. According to Google, "liberals" have a different meaning in the US than in the rest of the world. Same case as with the units of measurement.
