EVE "Dominion" was introduced a few weeks ago and brought massive overhauls to the game. The most striking one is to the sov. system, which has caused some problems within the game universe. There have also been massive graphics overhauls which have made EVE a much more beautiful place.
The video above is CCP's new trailer for Dominion. As a PVPer and FC, let me give it the FC's stamp of realism. While a bit overdramatic, and lacking the part where the chimera pilot emoragequits voice blaming everyone, it is much more realistic than EVE's older trailers. For example, lets take a look at the Quantum Rise trailer to compare the realism to the game experience.
As you can see, totally unrealistic to how the game plays. Cool watching a titan hit a high-sec station, but not cool when the new person finds out its fake.
Just to clarify, because a lot of people have asked, this is how the sov. system now works.
- A corporation or alliance lays down territory control units (TCUs) to take over systems. These units must be onlined for 6 hours to take the system.
- The controller may upgrade their system via a structure orbiting a planet to include more NPCs, better ores, things like that.
- An attacker has to plant more structures to take over stargates and make the TCU vulnerable, then they can capture the system by destroying it and poping in their own TCU.
While the idea was to make 0.0 more accessible for new alliances, it has actually turned 0.0 into a virtual lynch mob fiesta. Systems are now so hard to control it is almost unstable and some alliances have reported problems holding systems. In addition, small gangs of pirates can generally mess up someone's control for the fun of it since the takeover no longer depends on besieging starbases.
And CCP briefly had a bug where TCU's did not have to be online for the full 6 hours to take a system, and TCUs did not become invulnerable after the system was captured. I think we can all guess where this went.
Skyboxes and Planets
The most striking feature is the new planets. There are now 5 types of planets: lava, terrestrial, gas giant, storm worlds, and plasma planets. Each of them is beautiful in their own way, but my favorites are the storm worlds and the plasma planets for their amazingly dynamic atmospheres.
The new skyboxes aren't as diverse as CCP purported, but they are a massive improvement. There are now 5 basic types of skyboxes (and their different colors) instead of the old 2. The best change however is the ability to zoom into the starfield and see more and more stars.
And finally, Faction Ships
Dominion has a lot to prove after it purported that faction ships would have a total overhaul, but it certainly did not fault. Faction ships like the firetail and comet are now in common use in 0.0 and lo sec pvp because of their new bonuses.
But the most improved ship has to be the dramiel, which can now field 5 light drones and reach speeds of up to 7km/s! For reference, most crow type interceptors get 4-5! It also gets a lovely damage bonus for autocannons, making it the ship I most avoid when pirating in lo sec. The new dramiel will make mince meat out of everything.
