Thracians were an ancient people inhabiting modern day Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, eastern FYROM, north-eastern Greece and north-western Turkey. They were divided into different tribal states like Odrysia, Triballi, Dardani and Bithynia. The Thracians were involved in numerous wars in the Balkans, either as mercenaries or opponents, and were conquered by many invaders such as Persia, Macedonia and the Gauls. The Greeks considered them barbaric and cowardly drunkards. They were all finally annexed by Rome at the end of last century BC.

Spartacus, who lead massive slave revolts in Italy, was a Thracian. Some of the Roman emperors were of Thracian origin as well, such as Maximus Thrax.

I believe both the Dacians (lived in modern Romania and Moldova) and the Phrygians (lived in modern Turkey, and some parts of modern Greece) were cultural relatives to them.

Also, the peltast soldier was a Thracian invention, and they were a popular type of a mercenary for the Greeks. The Greeks eventually adopted the troop type as well.
