Post feature Report RSS Fanfiction: Resistance: Integrity of a Soul

I do not believe I am the best fanfiction writer, but hopefully you all enjoy it; this is just something I wrote in my free time.

The glow of the red light illuminated the interior of the VTOL, while the glow of the moon was bright in the night time sky. Corrian set in the VTOL as it moved through the night air. He looked outside to the picturesque setting, then back at the men and women in his squad, all sitting around him. All quiet except for Amethyst. He was praying to God in a whisper. Corrian did not mind this as Amethyst once told him how he includes him in his prayers. If God wants to help, he is not complaining, he welcomed it. Humanity needs help. It is at a crossroads of going extinct, being slaves, or actually going back to normal. What is normal anyway?

“Five minutes” calls out one of the VTOL pilots as it continues soaring through the night air. Corrian did not hesitate to ask his squad if they were ready. All shook their heads yes with a few looking nervous. “Is everyone clear on what we are after?” Corrians squad all replied with the same words as if one voice “Locate intel on the Spires, and sabotage any cannons.” “One minute!” The pilot of the VTOL calls out.

He did not want anyone to know, but where there headed, behind enemy lines, is just outside the city he was born in. He also did not want to admit that he will be inserting within 20 miles of his home. There is the chance he could see it again. “Do I really want to? Whatever is left if it is probably crawling with those things." Those things humanity is at war with. Those nightmare-ish monsters who drag people off in the night. “No.” He said to himself in his mind. “I must be strong.” And with that he took a last look at the picturesque setting of the night sky and the moon while the VTOL descended into the forest. He stomach began to twist and ache the lower the VTOL dropped into a small clearing. He knew those things are down here... Lurking and skulking. “No.” Again he thought to himself.

Everyone unloaded and stepped out on to the ground. The air seemed stiff and somewhat foul. “Captain, this is as close as I am willing to go! I am already risking my bird by traveling this far out in to enemy occupied territory! You’ll need to hump it the rest of the way!” Corrian shook his head and stepped out. Before he knew it, the VTOL had flown away and was now a distant echo.

The moon shined through the trees, while fog floated about on the forest floor. “Do you hear that?” Terra ask quietly. Corrian lifts an eyebrow out of confusion. “No… In fact, I do not hear anything.” Terra looks around hoping to hear any sort of ambient noise from wildlife. “Exactly my point, captain. I hear nothing but the trees shaking in the wind.” The entire squad suddenly gave worrying faces as they looked around. There was no noise. No bugs humming, no crickets, snakes, not even owls. In a high whisper, Corrian says “Well, we still have a job to do."

What seemed like hours has in fact only been 45 minutes. The forest was quiet, air stiff, even the water in the marshes was still. It is though time stood still in a eerie manner. Corrian had ordered the squad to remain silent. Through the fog, the long trees, under a cloudy night sky, with the only the light from the moon and their weak flashlights, they walked; quietly in the dark towards their objective. They had the coordinates, their maps, and compass, so they were at least headed in the right direction, but the dark forest was vast, expansive, and never seemed to end. Each time Corrian believed he was getting close, the map stated otherwise. They also had to stay clear of the alien patrols in the sky and lurking throughout the forest.

They climbed up a little hill in the forest and then, Corrian found something. Something that would scare him to his very soul deep inside. Something that was possible, yet unexpected. Sense he was the first up the hill, he was the first to see it. The rest of the squad made it up and stood there… staring.
