Xenonauts is a PC strategy game due for release in 2013. It is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games, putting the player in control of an organisation defending the world from an alien invasion. It is a grand strategy game that involves building and managing bases across the entire planet, controlling jet fighters and ground troops in battle against the alien forces, then researching captured extraterrestrial technology to unlock their secrets! Linux version uses WINE.
This is a zoomed-in version of the strategic map shown in Geoscape Screen #1. The player has two interceptors in the air, one single interceptor returning to base (the bottom one), while the attack squadron of two aircraft is just about to intercept the UFO squadron detected over North Africa (successful interception will launch air combat).
I'm not sure I like the map being stretched to fit a rectangle, things look a bit off. Do the ships' go faster in the stretched out regions around the poles?
I love the geoscape. I think it'd be cool if every crash stayed visible on the map permanently so you could pinpoint all the hot spots.
Even if the crash site 'expired' that'd, still look good. They could fade with age so they don't intrude on the look of the screen.
