cant say for sure if it was spelt different back in WWII but nowadays its "Ausweis" (S instead of ß)

No, you are right, it´s an Error! It wasn´t spelt different back in WWII, it was always spelt "Ausweis"!

Also when you break off a noun in German, you start the second noun with a capital. Ausweis-Kontrolle.
