What is The Drop?

Since I've finally managed to get the SlideDB page for The Drop up and running I thought I'd post an article about what the game actually is so you guys and girls can get to know me and my project a little better!

'The Drop' is a vertical infinite runner where the player controls a falling ball. Using touch controls the player can start and stop the falling ball, avoiding a variety of random obstacles in an attempt to get the highest score.

The Drop is my first game and as such I'm going to be releasing it on Android. I've chosen to do this because of the costs associated with becoming an Apple developer. Android is my way of dipping my toe in the water with the drop and if there is some interest in the game and people want to see it on iOS then that would definitely be an investment I'd be happy to make. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 and I'm using GIMP for the artwork to keep costs low.

Since I'm the only person working on the game and my skills are based in programming and game design the artwork so far is really basic placeholder stuff (as you can tell by the super simple logo at the top of this article :D), although I plan on spending a few weeks just on the artwork since I'm already pretty close to having most of the mechanics done!

About Me

My name is Lucas, I live in South Wales and am currently a 2nd year Computer Games Enterprise student at the University of South Wales. As well as The Drop, I'm also working with a larger team on a Virtual Reality prequel to Shakespeare's The Tempest, called Origin: The Tempest, that has been entered into a competition run by the British Library and Game City called 'Off The Map'.

Development Diary

I am going to be writing a weekly development diary that will be posted here on SlideDB and will document all the work I do on The Drop. I want to get as much feedback as I can on the game to make it the best it can be and to improve my game development skills so if you have any feedback I'd love to hear it, either get in touch through SlideDB, through my personal portfolio website www.lucasgracia.com or through the CodeRed website.

Thanks for reading, my next Development Diary update will be posted later this week so please check it out. Until then, enjoy this gameplay video of the latest version of The Drop!

Thanks

Lucas
