Following the fall of the mighty Soviet Union, dozens of autonomous states have sprung up from the crumbling remnants. One small republic, Novistrana, has become a hive of brutality and corruption. A ruthless dictator, Vassily Karasov, rules the country with an iron fist and a control based on fear and oppression. With a personal vendetta against him and seeds of discontent spreading throughout the nation, now is the moment to seize power and liberate the masses. Time to start a revolution.
This release offers you a chance to play the Republic: The Revolution for long 60 minutes, and as well includes all content of the full game.

Part 1: Things You Should Know
Please read through the DirectX section of this document. This section
has information that is vital to successfully running Republic: The
Revolution on your system.
1.1 DirectX
This game is optimised for Microsoft's DirectX 8.1. In order for you
to play the game, you must have DirectX 8.1-compliant drivers for your
video card and sound card. Please note that although DirectX 8.1 is
installed with the game, your video and sound card drivers will not be
upgraded to DirectX 8.1 drivers.
You will need to obtain the latest DirectX 8.1 drivers from your card
manufacturer or PC supplier. These drivers cannot be supplied by
Eidos.
1.2 Memory and Performance
The game requires 512 MB RAM to run. Anything less will cause the game
to run less than satisfactorily.
Regardless of how much memory you have, you can maximise your
available memory and increase the overall performance of the game
engine by doing the following:
- Closing any open windows
- Shutting down all other programs, including menu-bar programs like ICQ
- Defragmenting your hard drive
Eidos recommends that you have no other programs running at all while
playing Republic: The Revolution. Other programs, including virus
checkers, system utilities and screen savers can cause system
degradation when playing games software and may conflict with the game
for system resources, potentially resulting in instability and
crashes.
1.3 Known Issues
Q1. I cannot install the game! You may get an error when trying to
install the game.
If you are running Windows 2000, browse the Republic: The Revolution
CD-ROM and run the file "instmsiw.exe" by double left-clicking the
file with your mouse. Follow the instructions on the screen to perform
the installer update. Once this has finished, restart the computer and
then install the game as normal. If your operating system is Windows
98, run "instmsia.exe*, restart the computer and then install the game
as normal
Q2. I am getting an error messages such as "Installer Error 1607"
Depending on the version of Windows Installer that shipped with your
Windows Operating System, you may encounter problems installing
Republic: The Revolution into your computer. If you encounter any
problems follow the instruction below, (Please note: the game is not
supported on Windows 95, Windows NT or Windows Millennium Edition.)
1. Click *Start* and then "Run".
2. Enter the following text EXACTLY as it appears below:
MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER
3. Click "OK".
(Nothing will visibly happen, icons may flash on the desktop)
4. Click "Start" and then "Run" again and enter the following text
EXACTLY as it appears below:
MSIEXEC /REGSERVER
5. Click "OK".
(Again nothing visibly will happen. However, Windows is reregistering
all components of the installer.)
6. Install the game again.
Q3. Under Windows 2000/XP, I am set-up as a standard user. Can I
install?
You MUST have full administrator rights to be able to install and play
Republic: The Revolution.
Q4. My cursor seems to flicker all the time.
If you are running 2 monitors you should try disabling the second
monitor
Q5. Characters seem to flicker on and off in the game.
Users with a Nvidia graphics card running 4X.XX driver should make
certain that all of the advanced performance settings on their PC
(Control Panel, System, Advanced) are set to favour Application.
Q6. Is Alt-Tab supported?
Alt-Tabbing is not supported for the following reasons:
a) Upon Alt-Tabbing and returning to Republic: The Revolution,
occasionally the player can experience total loss of keyboard control.
The only way to address this is to Alt-Tab out and then back into
Republic: The Revolution.
b) Repeated Alt-Tabbing can cause severe game slowdown, which will
continue until Republic: the Revolution is shutdown and restarted.
Q7. In Berezina and Pugachev, I've forced all enemy members to leave
the Faction but the objective hasn't updated?
During objective's that requires you to force all enemy members to
leave their Faction, ensure you have your Knowledge Level as high as
possible in all districts across the city. It is quite possible that
on the Faction screen it will show the enemy Faction as having no
members, but there are actually members you are unaware of in areas
where your Knowledge Level is too low. You should always make sure
that you research all areas as thoroughly as possible, so that you can
identify these "hidden" enemy Faction members.
Q8. In Berezina, how do I Neutralize an enemy character?
When following an objective that requires you to Neutralize a
character, there are two ways to achieve this:
a) Use a Kill Action such as Hitman or Alpha Squad
b) Hire the character: Just hire the character and the Objective will
update.

Preparing Your Hard Drive
To ensure that your installation is trouble free, you should check to
see that your hard drive and file system are both tuned for optimum
performance. Windows comes with two utility programs that find and fix
any errors and optimise your hard drive performance. The first of
these programs is called scandisk. Scandisk will check your hard drive
for problems and can fix any that it finds. You can run scandisk by
clicking on the Start button from the Windows Taskbar, followed by
Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and finally scandisk.
Once scandisk has finished running, you should next optimise your hard
drive's performance by running a program called Disk Defragmenter. You
can run Disk Defragmenter by clicking on the Start button from the
Windows desktop, followed by Programs, then Accessories, then System
Tools, and finally Disk Defragmenter.
Installing Republic: The Revolution
Installing Republic: The Revolution is easy. Simply insert Republic:
The Revolution disc 1 into your CD-ROM drive. After a few seconds, the

You will be prompted to select the path and directory to which you
wish to install the game on your hard drive. The default is
C:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\Elixir Studios\Republic
You may change this if you wish to.
On the Auto Run panel you will see an option referring to DirectX, if
this options is Install DirectX then you do not currently have DirectX
8.1 installed and will need to click this option and follow the
prompts before playing Republic: The Revolution. If the option is
displaying as Reinstall DirectX then Microsoft DirectX 8.1 is already
installed on your system and you can install and play Republic: The
Revolution.
If the Republic: The Revolution Auto Run panel detects an active
version of DirectX 8.1 on your system, we encourage you to not
reinstall DirectX. If the Auto Run panel does not detect DirectX 8.1,
you must install it before you are able to play Republic: The
Revolution (please refer to the next section of this guide before
proceeding).

OR
Go to the Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs. Click on
Republic: The Revolution from the pop-up panel to follow, select the
Add/Remove button, and follow the onscreen prompts.
2.2 CD-ROM Problems
Republic: The Revolution requires at least a Quad-Speed CD-ROM drive
with 32-bit Windows
I receive a "xxxxxx.xxx not found" error message when installing or
running Republic: The Revolution
This error message is usually the result of your computer using MS-DOS
(16 bit) drivers instead of Windows (32 bit) drivers for your CD-ROM
drive. You can easily check to see if this is causing problems by
opening the Control Panel (either click on the My Computer icon or
click on the Start button followed by Settings, then Control Panel).
In the Control Panel window, double-click on the System icon then
click on the Performance tab. You should now see a summary of the
performance status of your computer. One of the lines should say *File
System: 32-bit* and the last line should say "Your system is
configured for optimal performance." If you see a message saying
"Drive X is using MS-DOS compatibility mode," then you will need to
contact your system vendor to obtain and install 32-bit drivers for
your CD-ROM drive.
AutoPlay Issues
Why doesn't the AutoPlay feature come up when I insert the Republic:
The Revolution CD into the CD-ROM drive?
This is usually a configuration issue. There are many different ways
to enable the AutoPlay functions of Windows. The standard method is
described below:
1) Enter the Control Panel from the desktop by clicking on the Start
button, followed by Settings, and then Control Panel.
2) Double-click the icon labelled System, usually located
alphabetically towards the bottom of the Control Panel window, to
bring up the System Properties panel.
3) Click on the tab at the top labelled Device Manager and when the
new panel appears, locate the section labelled CD-ROM and click the
Plus (+) sign in front of it. (If there is a minus sign in front,
don't click it.)
4) Now double-click the CD-ROM drive revealed and the CD-ROM
Properties panel will appear.
5) Click on the Settings tab at the top.
6) Towards the middle of the panel, you should see a few checkboxes
within the Options section. At the bottom of that section, you should
see a checkbox labelled Auto insert notification.
7) Make sure there is a check mark in the box provided and click on
the OK button to complete the process.
If the game Auto Plays multiple times:
Some CD ROM drives cause Republic: The Revolution to AutoPlay multiple
times, which also may result in lack of control within the game. To
remedy this problem click on the CD ROM properties in the System
Properties panel and under settings turn off Auto Notification.
2.3 Crashes and Lock-Ups
When I start Republic: The Revolution, my mouse cursor disappears and
my computer locks-up.
Chances are your installed audio card drivers are not compatible with
DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 8.1compatible driver
from your audio card manufacturer.
When I start Republic: The Revolution, I receive the following error
message:
"The application Republic: The Revolution.exe referenced memory at
address xxxx:xxxx that can't be read from."
Chances are your installed video card drivers are not compatible with
DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 8.1 compatible driver
from your video card manufacturer.
The Installer keeps stopping when a certain percentage is complete.
There are three likely causes:
- You may have run out of free space on your hard drive. Please
remove unwanted programs to free up additional space for the game, and
then reinstall Republic: The Revolution.
- Files are possibly being copied to a corrupted area of your
hard drive. If this is so, you'll need to run the scandisk program and
make sure to use the Thorough option (see previous). After scandisk
has finished running and has informed you that your drive is free of
errors, try to re-install.
- There may be dirt or fingerprints on the CD-ROM disc itself.
Examine the bottom of the disc; if you see any fingerprints or dirt,
carefully clean the disc using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth by
wiping from the centre of the disc (near the hole) towards the outer
edge in a straight line.
Republic: The Revolution is crashing to the desktop with no error
messages.
This problem can be caused by several different things. Here's a list
of the most common culprits associated with these crashes:
- Make sure the CD-ROM is clean (check for both scratches and smudges on
the reading surface of the CD).
- Make sure the game has been installed properly.
- Make sure DirectX 8.1 has been installed properly.
- Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card and that they
are DirectX
- Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card and that they
are DirectX
- Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system.
- Run Scandisk.
- Run Disk Defragmenter.
- Clean out old temp (.TMP) files from the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or
C:\WINx\TEMP directory on your hard drive (from Windows Explorer).
- Make sure you do not have any Anti-Virus utilities (like Norton's
AntiVirus) running resident prior to playing Republic: The Revolution.
- Make sure you do not have any third-party Windows memory management
utilities (like QuarterDeck's QEMM) running resident prior to playing Republic:
The Revolution.
- Make sure you do not have any 3rd party Windows disk caching utilities
running resident prior to playing Republic: The Revolution.
- Make sure you do not have Norton's Crash Protector running resident
prior to playing Republic: The Revolution.
- Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.
- Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the game.
Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing
Republic: The Revolution, you should probably reboot your computer
before starting a new play session. Otherwise, DirectDraw or
DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the game will be unable to
use your sound or video hardware.
2.4 Performance Problems
If you are experiencing performance problems you can try some of the
following, be warned though some of these should only be attempted by
advanced PC users:
- Try playing with the game options, Republic is designed to
make full use of a system spec but cannot, depending on drivers always
accurately detect all of your system hardware. If the game is running
very slowly look at reducing quality and variance of textures in
particular.
- Ensure that your machine is set-up to make full use of its
system memory and virtual memory * make certain your hard disk is
defragmented (See the section on Preparing Your Hard Drive) and that
you are running no other programs such as virus checkers, messengers
and the like all of which will stop republic from using all of your
system resources.
- In your system Bios (normally accessed by pressing the Delete
key during boot up) try adjusting the size of you AGP Aperture. This
has very varied results dependant on the combination of video card and
drivers you have and may cause the system to crash on boot up with
some settings * if this the case simply return the value to its
previous setting.
2.5 DirectX-Related Questions
DirectX has become the new standard in Windows application
development. Nearly all high-performance software will be geared
around this technology, so we do not normally recommend that customers
attempt to alter its installation on their system
Can I Run Without DirectX?
I cannot use DirectX on my computer! Is there any other way to run
Republic: The Revolution?
If you do not have DirectX installed on your computer, you will not be
able to run Republic: The Revolution.
