An update to the Kongregate version of Mustache Ride has rolled out, which you can play online now.

This update adds tweaks from the upcoming Windows 8 version, as well as changes made to the game thanks to feedback from the opening weekend of the game's launch on Kongregate.

Mustache Ride high score leaderboards

CHANGES TO THE SCORE SUBMISSION PROCESS

In the initial Kongregate launch, high scores were submitted based on the player's top records every time the title screen or game over screen displayed. This caused players to get a leaderboard score of 0 before even playing the game, as well as caused previously-earned scores to appear on the daily and weekly leaderboards despite having not been earned at that time.

To keep the leaderboards more interesting, the currently earned records will submit to Kongregate every time the game ends and the results of the flight are shown. The title screen will no longer submit the best records.

If for some reason a score does not properly submit to the Kongregate server (for example, the connection was lost mid-flight and not regained before the end of the flight), the player can force a submission from the title menu by opening and closing the high score records screen three times. A chime will play on the third time to let the player know the scores were successfully submitted.

The forced score submission will use the player's best records, so this feature can be used to submit old scores after they have been achieved. The update was designed simply to prevent this from happening automatically.

NEW TUTORIAL MODE

In the previous version of Mustache Ride, a help option was available that turned on a help screen that would appear before the player moved during a new flight session. The button in the menu was ambiguous and confusing due to its nature (saying "HELP ON" and "HELP OFF" depending on the current status), and the feature had to be found by navigating the menu.

In the update, the help screen has been completely removed in favor of a simple yet effective tutorial mode. This mode consists of nothing more than six screens explaining the basics of the game with both text and image.

This mode will launch before a flight if the player has never seen it before (after which, it will only be available from the options menu). This way players cannot miss it. The mode is easily skippable (just tap, click, or press space bar to skip each of the six screens quickly) for players who don't wish to view it the first time.

Thank You!!

OTHER CHANGES

Minor changes have been made to the way buttons and records are displayed to better fit the small screen size of Kongregate games. Graphics, sound, and code have been further compressed and optimized to make the game slightly smaller.

Thank you to all the great feedback on Mustache Ride so far since the Kongregate launch! I hope to continue improving the experience to bring a fun gaming experience to as many players as possible. Please continue to let me know through the comment, bug report, star rating, and private message features of Kongregate how you enjoyed the game and what I could do to make it more fun or easier to understand for you.
