Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox is an indie game with the intent to recreate the amazing turn-based, first person RPGs from the golden age of PC gaming using modern game engine technology. Rich classics such as the Might & Magic series, Eye of the Beholder and the like have inspired this new title which, when finished will put its players into a literally infinite fantasy world filled with procedurally generated content. The Sword of Ahkranox isn't trying to compete with the larger, professionally developed RPG titles out there, but instead our aim is to fill a large gap that we believe has existed in game technology since the mid-nineties. It is definitely a must-have for all enthusiasts of the quintessential RPG. The game's procedural engine can generate an infinite number of weapons, items, spells, monsters, dungeons, cities, countryside and even dialogue, allowing the player to explore the game with no end and no reason to stop.

The new lighting engine has finally been applied to the game!

Posted by on

So in the last news post we discussed how the new lighting engine was being applied to the game, well now we have a short video to show it off. Now, this is still very much a work in progress, so there are a couple of things to note about this video:

- The lighting system is not totally complete yet. Mainly the player's weapon has no lighting effects applied to it yet, but they ARE COMING. The weapons will be all shiny and reflective and pretty. Currently they are much brighter than they should be and have a weird ghosting effect due to the currently non-existent motion blur that will be coming.
- The dungeon tile set (models, textures, is still in development and not yet complete, so yes, the dungeon currently looks a bit repetitive, but that will change)
- For the sake of demonstrating the new lighting system, enemy AI was turned off for this video. That is why the enemies don't fight back or chase the player.

You've read those things? Alright, now you may watch the video ;-)

More to come as we make the game even better!

Thanks for the compliment! We're currently PC only at this point, though.

So do we! That's why we're dedicating so much to re-creating that genre the way it always should have been!

The one thing which this video makes me want to suggest is adding a lantern which casts dynamic light on the environment. The reason I say this is the dungeons seem a bit dark. Yes, I know they're supposed to be like that (after all, it wouldn't be a very fun or atmospheric game if dungeons were fully-lit all the time!), but I suppose I'd rather have as much illumination as is prudent.

Otherwise, AWESOME update guys!

You're on the right track, Expack! You're correct in saying that the dungeons are meant to be dark, but the player can also cast light spells and carry torches with them. I just didn't find any in this demo video ;-) but they do exist! A big reason for the darkness is getting to the bottom of a dungeon and having your torch go out with none to replace it. SCARY!
