Maelstrom takes you to the devastated future Earth of 2050. An alien invasion has triggered ecological disaster. In this new, apocalyptic world, water has become the most valuable of resources and divided the remaining humans into two factions. Now, they must wage war against the invaders and each other in a desperate struggle for supremacy and survival. It's all-out destructive war as you battle for control of the entire planet against fearless aliens, an army of high-tech super soldiers and a rag tag crew of human survivors.
very awesome concept, but needs about another year or so of development to really solidify the game. the two biggest things needing to be fixed are the pathing engine, as infantry can have problems walking across terraformed land-bridges quite wide enough for them, and manipulating tanks is a nightmare. secondly, the AI needs improvement, as I tested a skirmish game 1v1 with an easy AI, and didn't see sight nor sound of 'em for nearly an hour, at which point a single basic infantry unit suicide-charged the line of defenses I'd set up some thirty minutes ago. further, as a developer, I would have included a terraforming submenu,with the existing three commands and a number of macros to make an easier time of it. a 'build wall' macro, for example, would ask for length and height, a 'make ramp' macro to allow for better terrain modification, and a bridge macro to connect islands or high areas. an 'make plateau' command would have been nice as well, specifying height, size, and shape (simple geometric shapes, circles, squares,and perhaps hexagons) resulting in a even elevated area. all in all, a good game, albeit one that seems more like a beta kicked out the door by an overeager publisher than a finished product. 6/10
