Farpoint’s developer explains what the PS4 Pro has allowed them to do with PlayStation VR.

When the PlayStation 4 Pro was revealed earlier this week, Sony was somewhat vague on just exactly how the new and more powerful console would improve the experience of playing PlayStation VR games. Sony’s Mark Cerny briefly mentioned that the developer of PlayStation VR-exclusive first-person shooter Farpoint, Impulse Games, “doubled the rendered pixel count” with the PS4 pro, but beyond that no more detail was given.

Today, however, UploadVR published a deeper and more extensive interview with Impulse Gear’s co-founder Greg Koreman, who goes into specifics about how developing on the PS4 Pro has helped the game’s VR performance.

On the point of doubling the rendered pixel count, Koreman says:

“Across the board, it’s more crisp ... So absolutely everything will look clearer. It’s important, for example, when you’re looking down the sights. You can see that much more detail at long ranges. That is a big part of playing a first-person shooter, being able to see and engage with the enemy. And having that extra level of clarity helps us out there.”

The writer also felt that Farpoint’s textures were sharper and the game’s particle effects clearer, since the game is being rendered at a higher resolution – however, it’s still being downscaled to the PlayStation VR’s lenses after the fact.

Farpoint was first revealed by Sony at E3 2016, though its price and release date may have been leaked yesterday, along with the existence of a bundle that includes the new PlayStation VR Aim Controller. No official release date or price has yet been revealed.
