First off, just a quick note, this weekly update is early because I will be away on vacation this week. Don't worry, you can still expect to see another update next week!
What follows is the third segment of the Mars Lander Builder Behind the Scenes write-up. Click titles below to read other segments:
Ranking Difficulty:
Working with Mars Lander Builder is fun experience. I’d really worked hard to iron out any bugs in the interface, even before I knew that I was going to be using the program to be making levels on a weekly basis. I made sure that it was easy to make modifications to a level and test those modifications quickly. As a result, working with the program now, it doesn’t take me much time to make the five levels. The most time I spend making the levels is probably testing them. I’ve never published a level I haven’t beaten. That includes collecting every Crystal in a level!
Incidentally, that is the way I gauge the difficulty of a level. When I assemble a Level Pack, I never base the order of the levels on how it easy it is to get from the starting position to the end of the level, because I’ve always added crystals to the level. Although I definitely make the overall level more challenging based on the number I’m making, I’m primarily concerned with how hard it is to get all the crystals and then make it to the Landing Pad. As a result, the recent introduction of the Crystal Collector Game Mode has not changed the way I rank the difficulty of levels.
This week's level pack is all about picking your route. Sure you will easily be able to beat each level if all you care about is getting the the Landing Pad, but if you want a perfect score, things are going to be considerably more difficult!
