Battle Mages: Sign of Darkness is a stand-alone add-on for Battle Mages. This means there are no technical or gameplay innovations but new campaigns. The story is set before Battle Mages where the player rescued the world after humans, dwarfs, elves and orcs divided and fought each other. The four cohesive campaigns of this game show how this could happen. The player takes the role of a soul ghost which flies over the map and controls the units. The game itself is a mixture between classical real-time strategy and RPG. As ghost the player has no inventory and needs his minions to transport items such as artifacts. Of course there also used for fighting. The units get experience points for solved quests and defeated enemies and can level up five times. This improves there abilities. The ghost can intervene too by using magic spells. He gets experience points too and the player can choose the spells he wants to improve. By exploring the map he finds more quests to solve.
