atWar, formerly Afterwind, is a free-2-play online multiplayer turn-based strategy game (Silverlight). In the best traditions of Risk and Axis & Allies, you play against other people to fight for world domination. Features free unit movement - no grids or predetermined paths. Up to 20 players in a game, simultaneous turns. Another feature is the Map Editor allowing players to create their own maps and units, giving you the chance to re-enact any battle real or imagined. If you get disconnection problems with the Desura file right after you load the game then you should disable the firewall or add a firewall exception rule... or just go to our website and play in your browser there.

Worthy game.

It's a real shame the community of freeloading, angsty teenagers absolutely stinks and the centralised nature of the game (ah, the wonders of F2P!) means that you are unlikely to find a quality group of players to play with before you get bored with the game.

Gameplay-wise, if it weren't for some horrible, horrible lag (often resulting in disconnects) (this is another weakness of the centralised server model) at peak times, this would get an 8/10. It certainly innovates in the turn-based strategy genre, and in a positive way, too. It makes turn-based strategy games truly exciting and much less linear than usual by allowing movement without being restricted to grids as traditionally happens in the genre.

The poor community and near-fascist group of moderators(though they have calmed down more recently) seriously lower the value of this game though, hence the 6/10.
