atWar, formerly Afterwind, is a free-2-play online multiplayer turn-based strategy game (Silverlight). In the best traditions of Risk and Axis & Allies, you play against other people to fight for world domination. Features free unit movement - no grids or predetermined paths. Up to 20 players in a game, simultaneous turns. Another feature is the Map Editor allowing players to create their own maps and units, giving you the chance to re-enact any battle real or imagined. If you get disconnection problems with the Desura file right after you load the game then you should disable the firewall or add a firewall exception rule... or just go to our website and play in your browser there.

Risk evolved and now you can fight with different and diverse units (which you can give certain edges with selecting a strategy to play in a game) without silly grids on pretty much every map imaginable. What's more, if you picture one and it isn't there, you can make it yourself, with your own custom units. The non user generated game is set in modern era in the world map (of which you can play specific parts if you don't want all of it) with most of the modern countries and a palette of generic military units to choose from in all branches. The custom maps can feature anything from medieval and ancient wars to futuristic dystopias and gang wars in Rio. The game has a rather small learning curve as the engine is uniform among all maps and it is easy to get games in most hours of the day. Most important the games says free and it is truly free; it's not pay to win.
