Hi Community!

We are still developing RUN. And yesterday we were discussing the topic:
-> WASD or Mouse movement?

For those who don't know, RUN is a stealth action game with puzzling levels.

We would like to know: Which movement style do you thnk it's better for a Top Down Stealth game? WASD or Mouse?

You can check a prototype of RUN's gameplay: Youtube.com

We want to polish our game and deliver an unique experience. And know a bit more ideas from you

Thank you :D

WASD. Especially if there's going to be non-targetable fighting/interactions or limited FOV.
It also depends on camera mode - is environment going to rotate (so your char always looks on the top of the screen) or maybe north always face up? IMO the best is the first option, with mouse controlling view angle and WASD movement like in FPP games. But fixed world with mouse aiming and WASD movement works too.

WASD For sure.

Why "or"?
Why not add a setting and let the player choose?

Depends on how responsive is the mouse in controlling the character. Despite that, I'd rather do the WASD just because it is more natural to control a character like that. You get to control the movement instantly rather than rely on path finding that may or may not do stupid stuff.

Looking at your prototype video, I'd say WASD is the better choice. Else you can get weird errors with pathfinding in the scripting which might bug during stealth gameplay. Also I think it will feel more natural for players to control the character with WASD in your type of game.

If you have the time though, you should implement both.
