Starting my final year of university next year so I decided to get a head start on my final year project, problem is im not really sure what that is. Due to experience and the software capabilites im probably going to use UE4. Any ideas, help or tips?

Having done something similar myself in school, here's my best tip: Take the idea you come up with and simplify it. Then, cut that down. Then, distill that. Then, simplify that. Then, find the most interesting thing about what's left and run with it, and be prepared to cut a lot more. :)

Is it a solo project? If so, come up with something that will showcase your strengths while also showing how it helped you grow in a new way.
If it's a group thing, do you get to assemble your group? If so, find the most varied and competent, driven people you can. Game development for school projects can suck, and you want the hard workers.
If it's a group thing and you don't get to pick your group, make Checkers. :) Seriously, though, pick something that's a mostly known entity and not terribly complicated so everyone can contribute their strengths, but add your own flair to it.

Unless you have to, I'd advise against trying to push too many new boundaries with your concept even if you want to (but bring something new with you). Don't try to build The Next Big Thing; build Your Thing. Own it. Make it yours, but know that it's going to change drastically from its original idea. Trying to be the greatest game ever might cloud your judgment and harm your finished product.
Playtest a lot. Early. Find what makes it interesting and redesign quickly. Have others try it out, and find out what they like. Make sure everyone on your team (if there is one) plays it, too.

With a team of 10 students, we had a year and a half to make a game. We came up with Robot Pinball Escape, which is a pretty decent game if I do say so myself. But what's on Desura right now is so incredibly different from the original concept. At the time, it was sad to take the amazing game idea we had and watch it become a really shiny, buggy 3D platformer with poor player messaging. But, in the end, it was our shiny, buggy 3D platformer with poor player messaging. We made it ourselves from nothing. And that was cool. :)

All this said, it's your project. Make it awesome. And good luck.

It will be just me doing this over the course of a year.
Thrown out a few messages to companies aswell to see what would impress them.
Thank you for your support and advice :)
