I'm thinking of making a game where you suddenly wake up to a nuclear bomb explosion and have to take cover and survive the coming fallout. You would have to find food and water and witness the end of society. This is pretty much a rough summary for what I wanna make. Do you think that it's too far-fetched or would it be a good idea?

It would be a very short game. Depending on how far you are from the heart of the explosion you may have 1 minutes maybe 2 to act. The only realist thing you could do is to pray, or call for your mum.

If you are a far enough distance to not be directly hit by the explosion, then one nuclear bomb is not the end of the world, at best a city. And even if it's the biggest city in the country, the governement should be able to handle it correctly.

But, if you want to make a clone of fallout, well, I think it's a bad idea.

Yeah, I'm trying to stay away from a game like fallout. Maybe it' could be an invasion by other nations against the U.S and you're caught in the middle of it all. I'm really just open to any ideas on the subject.

Actually, if you could make a short game wherein you hear a warning like this one:
Youtu.be

and add in sirens like this (and so on and so forth):
Youtube.com

And have to escape/hide, that would make for a short, but pretty terrifying game, IMO. :)

Yeah, I was thinking about using most of those sounds. But I don't want the game to only be like 5 minutes long. That's why I'm thinking of making the game start with nuclear bombs being dropped on the U.S and progress into a full invasion of the U.S.

Unless you have a budget of several million dollars, you're not going to be competing with COD. Even if you aren't competing with COD, creating a full MMS with lots of detailed characters, environments, and other assets would be very difficult (read : next to impossible). I think sticking with a limited concept would be a better idea.

Alright, but do you have any ideas of how to make the game longer or add more mechanics to the game?

You may make something like "I am alive".

Eh, that's not really what I'm looking for. I want the player to be experiencing the actual events and the coming days right after it, not the aftermath in the distant future.

Add more scenarios. Survive a Tsunami, an office building terrorist attack, a riot, a caving in mine, a WWII bombing raid, a home invasion, heck, even being chased by a swarm of African Hornets. Don't worry about making Crysis 4 graphics, and keep the scenarios short (15-30 minutes) and you should be good. :) With 12 scenarios, that works out to 6 hours, which is pretty good for an Indie game, and that's not even taking into account features that allow for replayability like randomly generated maps or even simply spawning in different locations..

So, just making it into small scenarios that you try to survive. That kinda reminds me of LSD simulator which is pretty trippy. Seems like a cool idea. How exactly would it work though? Just go from one scenario to another until the game is over? I was thinking of adding a story but I guess that could work.

You could play as a person who's country/world is going to hell. Low resources combined with natural disasters could cause the nation/world to deteriorate, people to become desperate and attack others, wars to break out, all culminating in a nuclear war. You're just an average joe who's along for the ride. You could convey news of the outside world through TV and radio broadcasts for the player to listen to while running for their life.

That actually sounds really cool. Would you play this if it was game?

Assuming it's competently done, Yep. :)

Alright, cool.

hi there!

a few years ago, i had a similar idea. not exactly about surviving a nuke, but rather surviving all sorts of disasters. derailings, tornadoes, everything. and of course, nukes. gotta love them nukes. just saying, adding many different scenarios would make the game richer and more diverse.

have you found a concept artist / game designer yet? i am no programer, but i'm quite a decent artist, if i might say so myself.

No, I haven't found anyone yet for the game. I was thinking of modeling the stuff myself along with the level design and scripts. I've never modeled a person but I'll probably look up some tutorials. I'm open for any help though for stuff like concept art.

i could help with the architecture of the scenery (level design), character concepts, item designs and stuff.

Great, I'll start by modeling some houses or buildings and put in some cinematics for the intro.

cool. soon as you have anything i can help with, let me know. i just need you to provide me specific requests, if you're broad i might lose focus.

the nuclear idea sounded great. Keep it simple though. Zomboidy, zelday kind of thing would work.

Like 2D or 2.5D? I was thinking of making it in 3D so it's more realistic.

Jan 21 2014 Anchor

yeah if you can manage then go nuts. I'd keep it super simple - just to further improve the chances of completion.
but I meant zomboid kind of 2d. But whatever.

the idea is cool.
