I bounced this idea out before, but never properly developed it. Now with v2 hopefully just around the corner, i think it's time to roll it out again. As you should all know by now, there are vague ideas for modDB having file serving. However, at the moment this is a bugger to do for a variety of reasons. My proposal is a peer-to-peer system, like bittorrent but not quite, in which any user of modDB can download an application, and turn their PC into a download node (cool half-rhyme in there as well). This then means that that one person, with appropriate rights (e.g. mod leader) could select any file on their hard-disk, associate it with a mod, and send it in for verification (several checksums in order to prevent frigging). Once a moderator clears the file, it silently puts itself on nodes around the world (from the original computer to the nodes) with enough disk space/bandwith (at this point the file is not available for download). Once there are enough 'seed nodes' (as selected by the moderator when they authed it based on estimated popularity) the file becomes public. As more people download it, there are more nodes available. Likewise if a file is almost never downloaded it will only remain on the seed nodes until a preset time with no downloads, when it is wiped. What about files being deleted? Here is the genius, people with space/bandwith to spare can set themselves as 'key nodes' i.e. they will collect as many files as they can, and just store them. Obviously modDB will run a couple of fileservers for this purpose, which can act as seed nodes if an ancient file is ever requested. Dunno how you would feel about this, but I like the idea (evidently). It's true that I can't program clientside applications worth a damn, so there would need to be a development team... thoughts? |

The idea would be a secure, centrally managed P2P. Servers would be preferable, but the bandwith costs would be farking extortionate, plus it would mke getting big mod files on and off a bugger. A custom network & app would include things like resumability, multipoint downloading etc. as well as better organisation (i.e. find me all the files for mod x). Nothing that couldn't be done on the site with a lot of frigging, just a cool way to do it. In addition this could then be a client for much more, such as rolling stats, PM notification, IM service... |

To much coding, however with the increase of GC budget, it is going to become a download site and hopefully we can implement the idea |
