...and I could use a lighthouse.

Well as my title is vague as all hell I'll get to the point, I want to mod Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I want to make a fan version/patch for my girlfriend that will never be distributed to anyone, ever. Just played between me and my girlfriend.

I just want to do things like add custom events, music, npc's, dialogue, etc. Is this possible? If it is possible, where do I start?

I also was thinking I would use a program, like Unity 5, to recreate the game but again never to be distributed. I would recreate the game in my own image using unity, taking away the need to mod the original game. Would this be a more feasible idea?

I know because I'm asking these questions I must be a newbie, and probably am far off from being able to take a project like this on, but I wanted to get into modding things for fun and I wanted to undertake a project that would be fun for me and my girlfriend to work on and learn from. any information on what I would need to do to get started would be awesome!

my apologies if this was posted in the incorrect area.

Recreating a Zelda game in Unity as a single person sounds like something close to impossible. There are a few mods out there Moddb.com , maybe you can find some info on how they did it or maybe you can even get in touch with them. But to be honest, this sounds like a massive amount of work for a mod that will never be shared. Maybe get your girlfriend some flowers and do a trip instead.

Does it have to be Ocarina Of Time? And if you're building it from scratch, that means you'll have to know how to use Unity and it's tools. Placing and locking cameras from scratch, environment assets, 3D characters like Link and every NPC and monster you fight. You won't be able to only use Unity to build Ocarina of Time from scratch. You will probably need level-mappers and CG artists for certain things in your game, as well as whatever programming language you would be using. Unity uses C# and I believe a few others, but it's no easy task.

I believe it'll take someone 5+ years if you have no programming experience WITH HELP. lol

Modding is probably your best bet and I found a community that might be of help for you.

Good luck!
