It's hard to tell success of idea without implementation at all. My suggestion is to just implement it already and feel yourself if it's good or not |

It sounds like your combining a platform game with a point in click. If you had no way of harming enemies, you'd not only have to use the to navigate the world but defend from enemies and their attacks. Maybe 3 different kinds of blocks (one for each mouse click) Basic stone, damage enemy and reflect attack? Definitely need to put a timer between block spawns so players cant just hold the mouse down and run across every pit. Of course having a platform game where the player can go anywhere, it does encourage a lot of exploration, so lots of hidden secrets maybe? |

Thank you verry much for your answer. Your idea with 3 different blocks is verry good. I think the platformer would be more difficult with this. How do you think should be the enemies (super mario or should they can move more free)? How should be the graphic (2d like supermario or more like a 2d rpg)? How would you include secrets? I would like it to work on the idea in the forum or on skype with you. What do you think about it? Thanks a lot Cryttexx |

Well going with your idea of a platformer, stick with 2D like Super Mario. For enemies, you can start with the basic prototypes you see in most platform games (walk left and right, fly up and down, hop, enter screen do something and then leave, move towards player) You can see how those play before entering more unique types of enemies of your own design. For secrets, things that are just above the top of the screen kind of thing, or hidden in walls. If the player was to put a block halfway up the screen and then jump up from that they may see the bottom of a platform that has treasure, lives power ups or items on it. I would also recommend only having the player be able to place their blocks at certain spots to prevent them from hopping over all the obstacles your carefully crafted levels have. I'm seeing a lot of in-door levels. Make a prototype to see if its fun to play and what works. The bring it back to see if anyone interested in playing your game can find exploits or bugs. You can do it, the entire forum believes in you! |

Thank you so much. You are the first person who helps me with the idea. The idea with the diiferent boxes is verry good. I think it makes the game more difficult. Three questions: 1. Should i make an extra thread for the game when i program it 2. How much i must do to realese the prototype 3. Do you want to message with me with skype because its easier Thanks Cryttexx |

Well your welcome, but I think DarkBloodbane beat me to the punch. To answer your questions; 1) You can either start a new thread or continue this if you want to. Personally I would start a game on your homepage and start a new thread, double your chances of people seeing it. 2) For the prototype, have the basic graphics in place. I'm guessing this will be a 16bit esc game because you mention. Your graphics don't have to be amazing right out of the gate but functionality and controls should be tight. Get your 3 boxes, places where the boxes can be placed, character functionality and enemies should all be working perfectly. The graphics, don't worry about them too much now, you can start with Atari esc graphics, and improve on them later. Minimal sound would also be nice. 3) I'm never on skype, but feel free to message me over the Indiedb message system if you want to bounce some ideas. |

Ok. Thank you again. Next three weeks i have holidays so i can make the prototype. But i will start an extra thread and blog for this. And im not so a noob. I can java a little bit and so on. But i never designed games. So i dont know all the many steps. It would be verry nice if you could look for my project sometimes. When my prototype is ready i will send you a message or you can read it in the blog. Do you have any ideas for a story? I have already some. Thanks. Cryttexx |
