Over the past few weeks i was thinking of making a open-world larg-scale ww2 fps/tps game, but i don't have any experience with game or mod development. I was thinking of building this game of unreal engine 2 or 3 or probably cryengine 2. The game will feature a full single-player campaign where you can play as both the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania and Finland) and the allied forces, (United states of America, United Kingdom, Canada, Poland, and Russia) this game is not a simulator, so when you drive a vehicle, such as a tank, the driver controls both the main gun and the tank. You can control a squad of bots (a squad of up to 12 soldiers). Multiplayer is both infantry and vehicle-based combat and lot's of maps (Stalingrad, Omaha beach, kursk, peleliu, Juno beach, Ste. mere Eglise etc.). There is a rank system and a class system.

Ideas
- Ability to command a squad of AI soldiers (only able to command up to 12 soldiers)
- Higher ranked soldiers are the only ones who are able to give orders to other soldiers
- Driveable vehicles
- Realistic skins (for weapons, infantry and vehicles)
- Buildable structures (i.e. bunkers, guard towers, mg nests, munition bunkers, barracks, etc.)
- Class system (Medic, rifleman, support, anti-tank, Engineer)
- Cooperative campaign
- Ability to play as the Axis or Allied troops in the Singleplayer campaign
- Completely destructible environments
- Morale system (i.e. soldiers can surrender if their morale is low)
- Really really smart AI
- Singleplayer Campaign which spans the whole war
- Non-linear campaign (you're free to complete missions your own way, and the story could play out either way, the axis could win the war, or they could still lose it like what happenned in real life. Operation market garden could be a huge success whereas Operation overlord could be a total failure.)
- Open-world what is free for you to explore.
- Map creator/Mission editor
- Customizable loadouts in both singleplayer and multiplayer

Can someone please help me gain some experience with developing games and mods from Id tech 3, unreal engine 2, unreal engine 3 or cryengine 2 so i can actually develop this game. I'm 14 and i'm ashamed to admit that there are probably 12 year-olds out there who can develop a mod or game. I need a lot of help getting to know each engine, what the hell a source code is, and what to do with it, how to use source development kits, how to skin, map and various other things and how to port things over to console. I really like the second world war (but that doesn't mean i like killing people) it's very fascinating.

OK, first off, don't worry about your age. Focus on what you can make.

Second. Write that Idea down somewhere (like, say, here). Then forget about it. You will not be able to actually make that game for another few years, and even then it will take a while. Remember, the ideas you're thinking of take 100-person, skilled teams years to make (wanna see an example as to why it takes so long? This is what usually goes into just getting your "really, really smart AI" simply from point A to B: Critterai.org ) With that said, you could easily make a simpler FPS.

As for engines, I'm going to recommend Unity. It's what I use, and it's a great engine that makes it really easy to push stuff out quickly. It's also really easy to publish to multiple platforms (although consoles need a hefty license fee regardless). Also, I was in your position a year-and-a-half ago. Came out of Gamemaker, wanting to make 3d games, so I tried the first engine I had heard of, UDK. I had no idea what I was doing, and spent hours googling for n00b tutorials. Then I tried Cryengine 3, but it crashed my computer frequently, and I heard from several experienced programmers that it was "not designed for use by human beings." So, I tried Unity. Made a fully-functional destructible cube-wall within the first 5 minutes, and dropped a boulder(read : textured sphere) on it. Never looked back.

Anyways, if you want to make an FPS, I'd recommend you download Unity, then get started on these tutorials: Youtube.com

Also, you're going to need modelling & texturing software. Blender and GIMP are the go-to free solutions for that.

Have you ever played Red Faction: Guerrilla? I think something like their structure of side missions and main missions would work great for something like this.

No problem, I like it's structure because it encourages independence, but doesn't allow you to just dick around freely too much. Anything you are doing is helping the red faction in someway.
