I'm just a fresh out of college illustrator looking to get into game development. I have limited coding experience (HTML, PHP/MYSQL, Actionscript, and C++), of which I have only dabbled in mostly. I'm looking to start focusing on animating for games, and even developing my own games because I think I'm capable. Basically, I'm looking for guidance on getting started. I'd like to focus on pixel oriented animation and development, so if anyone had any resources they could throw my way, as far as pixel art or where I might start to create my own application (what engine I might want to use), it would be greatly appreciated. And hey, if you have anything you might want me to be a part of, I'd be happy to help you out. Anyway, hi!

Hi!

Welcome to SlideDB! I'm also new to this forum! I work for an Independent Gaming Studio in Liverpool called 3BYTE. We have just released our debut game JetSpin Hustle you should check it out!

You should use Unity as your engine to making games! What sort of games would you like to start developing? A mobile app game or a game for Steam?

Regards,

Ben

Psh, any kind of game would be awesome. I just want to be a part of game development. I am most capable in the graphics department; Photoshop, flash, illustrator. I know all of those programs very well. Coding has always been the missing link on my end. It's not that I can't do it, it just takes a lot of time to learn properly, time I would probably rather spend on making the graphics more than anything. At the moment I'm working in flash and re-familiarizing myself with actionscript which I have dabbled in, which I gather is similar to C#. Right now I'm interning for this company doing a bunch of grunt work and it just doesn't really seem like where I want to take my skills, it feels more like work than fun. I will be downloading Unity, I've worked in UDK before and we had Unity at my school, I just never checked it out. I have a fair amount of experience in 3D Modeling as well, in 3DSMax and Maya. I just prefer 2D, always have.

If you're looking for anyone to do something graphic wise, I'm down. Thanks for the response too, I appreciate it.

If you are mainly an artist, but want to slowly develop an understanding of code OR eventually be capable of programming, and especially game design mechanics, I suggest Game Maker Studio before stepping up to the likes of Unity.

In GMS, you can design a game with absolutely no code, and then ramp-up with small injections of code. It is Windows native with iOS, Android, Linux and HTML5 platforms availlable. It is FREE for Windows exports and $560 for all platforms or a pay per platform option, unlike Unity: Free:Personal use only and $75 per month minimum (forever) which could cripple an indie.

GMS is also great for mock-up screens, another bonus for artists OR alpha prototypes. I often use GMS before porting to C# classes or JSON.

That being said GMS is NOT for the 3D community.
