This post is primarily directed at concept artists, however I would like to hear people's opinions on the subject regardless of your experience.

I work on the mod Guard Duty which is the Blue Shift Source remake. We have a recruitment process which involves applicants taking a small test assignment before being accepted onto the team. What we have found over the last year or so is that its incredibly difficult to retain concept artists on the team. I understand that being a remake of a game alot of people think there is little concept art needed or that it wont be fun to produce.

We do indeed require a reasonable amount of concept art of environments, puzzle improvements, alien improvements and even new/extended areas that arent in the original game. We as a team have been discussing how to get the community involved more actively and so I thought it might just be easier to ask you all directly instead of speculating.

If we opened up all the concept art positions in our team and instead allowed people to contribute whatever half life related concept art they enjoyed making, what would be a decent incentive to encourage people to participate?

We have already decided that every person who submits work would receive the proper creditation and if their work was to be used to help development we would incude them in the credits of the mod and more than likely future media releases. What we were aiming to do is remove the burden of having to join a team 'fulltime' and instead allow people to go wild making cool concepts whenever they please. Thoughts and ideas are welcome.

I have acceptable experience in drawing concepts. Maybe I can help you.
So, please tell me more details about your mod, and I may help your team without any creditation, I just draw for fun. I have many ideas, but is a complete noob in programming, so I can probaly start drawing concepts first.

Hi, thanks for your interest, however I was looking for more of a discussion about community involvement in mods rather than advertising an available position.

Podcast 17 mentioned this a couple of weeks back, something about people pooling resources for mods and getting the community involved.

Of course I am not trying to get an available position in your team :) I just want to know more about your mod so that I can support my ideas.

I think that the incentive of not having to work 'round the clock on a project and getting credit where credit is due is more than enough. It just sounds like a great idea.

Thanks, ive been talking to the rest of the team about it and trying to come up with some good ideas. It may be something we try and implement. Now im just trying to figure out the best way to promote the concept and how best to show off the work produced.
