Hi folks,

I have been a gamer/modder for years, seriously started out with mods for myth 2 (where my maps death valley and pandemonium were very well received), then NWN, later Morrowind, dabbled a bit with the UT 2004 editor, and now have half-life 2.

I have some basic modeling skills, in Max 5, as well as some XSI experience. I know my way around Photoshop, can come up with a half decent texture, but all that is not why I am here.

My main passion is making sounds and music, especially dark music, with a twist, and most of it is really well received on mp3unsigned.com, where I have posted some samples. I would like to participate in a exciting mod, I could dedicate 10-15 hours to composing a week.

The samples on mp3unsigned are mostly general music types, some dance/trance like pieces, some ambient, and some experimental. If you have a mod going, and you are looking for a good sound/music creator, send me a link and a short wishlist of some track and a few sounds, and I will make you a sample set for evaluation, if the mod subject interests me and the approach seems serious.

For good measure, here are some of the things I did in 3D. Those are just samples, I am not at all a full rounded modeller, but it is never a bad thing to have a composer that actually knows about modding.

And some medieval/aftermath type music:

Hope I can get some feedback here, thanks for your attention :)

Whoa, those are some amazing renders and textures! I like the way the blade looks, especially with the attention detail with the etchings. You're good at what you do, evidently. :)

Thanks for the compliment, Karuto. They're halfway decent, I would say, but making them takes a lot of time, I lack the regular exercise.

Anyone have an idea why my banner won't appear in my sig?

EDIT: Ack, hold on...

You have it right so far, but you just need to make sure that you have the image set of as so: [img-]url[/img-], without the dashes.

There we go. :)

Might also want to try www.imageshack.us instead to host your image.

Weird, I see no error in the syntax there. It does say images OFF to the left of the edit window...

Put this: [img][/img]
Inside of this tag: [url=][/url]

And between the two image tags, without using an = sign like the url, put the url of the image you're trying to show.

Lol, this is hard to explain...

Lol, this whole thread is going to be dedicated on how to put up a url on an image.

Use this url instead between your image tags: I152.exs.cx

I can link through to the image, still it is shown as text in my signature when I paste it in. Is there some other setting that I must change?

Thanks for your help so far, btw :) I'll make a new presentation threads afterwards :D

Sure, no problem. And if you plan on making a new thread about this, go ahead and PM a moderator (ShortCutMan, BigBird, FoRk, etc.) and have them delete this one so you can start off fresh.

If you have any more problems, either post them on my profile or on a moderator's, and they will get to you as soon as they can.

Heya, Pruneau.

A few days ago, I decided to pursue my dream of creating the game I wanted to play. It's a Half-Life 2 Modification called Styles and Skills. It's an urban/modern themed online fighting game with a lot of solid gameplay ideas behind it.

I think a musician's going to be very crucial for the game to set the tone for its atmosphere and overall 'feel' when in all aspects of the game, so I wanted to ask if you would take the time to look into what we have going on. The announcement thread I made was here at:

Moddb.com

As the thread says, I have a fully detailed outline for how the game will play and what features we plan on getting done.

I hope to hear from you soon and thanks,
Halorin

Hi Halorin.

Thanks for the quick reply. The subject you mention is certainly interesting, much along the lines I would like to find. However, I understand the mod is just starting.

I am certainly willing to consider this, but I think a lot of more pressing matters have to be in place before sound and certainly music become an issue. I read your announcement, and it is a good concept, well thought out, but at the moment nothing but a concept. So for the time being, let me answer with 'maybe later', considering you have long months ahead in which to set up the framework etc.

Good luck, and keep me informed...

Well, if you're ever interested, Pruneau, we are in need of a texture artist for our mod. We're going for a different style than most mods (third-person melee action). Not to mention, we have plenty of concept art, and a few models on our forums (mostly weapons and map objects, but more to come real soon).

If you're interested in our project, I wouldn't mind having you come aboard, with all due respect to Halorin's post. :)

Thank you for the consideration, Pruneau. So far I believe the production team behind Styles and Skills is 3 members strong. We have myself, a public relations specialist/texture artist, and a concept artist. It's tough to pitch an idea for a mod to someone that would require hours on end of hard work and dedication with only a concept and my word that I know I'm personally in this for the long haul, which is why I've waited so long to take the plunge, but... Hey. We have to do what we believe in and all that, right?

Keep an eye on us. I'm looking forward to turning heads.

Halorin: I will keep that eye on you! If you feel watched, you're not going insane, it will be me ;P

Karuto: Thanks for the offer, but I think you dearly overestimate my mapping skills. I can drop some noise on a gray background, splatter it, colorize it, and finish it with airbrush, yielding a virtually endless series of gray-brownish sci-fi tunnel walls with rust and dirt, and I can make a kind of metal, but that must be it. I will be giving the site a good look, though, I love concept art :D

Hi there pruneau - welcome to the forums. My name is Grahame, and im the leader of the farcry modification Sovereign Dawn. We will be looking for sound engineers soon, and would like you to consider joining us in the future. My mod's temporary webpage can be seen at www.sovereigndawn.com , along with our design document and some concept images. Im currently at school - so i cant listen to or comment on any of your music - but your renders look excellent. BTW Karuto - looking forward to playing your mod. And gl to you Halorin, very interesting concept - hope you can get a team together soon so we can see it come together.

Hiya Grahame,

I just checked out your site, some cool stuff on there. Looking forward to the final version. I must say that the topic of your mod is right up my alley. I also read your design doc, that is looking good as well. Original soundtrack sounds like the kind of challenge I am looking for :)

Some questions I have:
I do not own Far Cry, what engine does it use?
What is the 3D app of choice for it?
Where can I get a quick general update on modding, sound file formats and so on for Far Cry?
Has the C++ SDK been released in the meantime?

The FPS-RTS hybrid looks cool, although not exactly straightforward to implement, luckily I need not bother about that :D

Maybe it would be a good idea if you give me the description of a number of sounds and a music track you know (or think) you will be needing, which I can create for your evaluation. After that we can see if we are compatible :D

Cheers, Pruneau

Hi, thanks for taking interest. I got a chance to listen to some of your music - and i like most of it (except for the dance tracks - but thats unrelated anyways) and i am impressed by your models.

FarCry uses the CryEngine. more information on it can be found at www.crytek.com , but i would reccomend picking up the game itself - as it is a great single player experience, plus theres some great mods coming out for it like Obsidian Edge and HARD.

3ds Max is the reccomended 3d app for it, but maya, gmax and most the main stream apps are compatable via plug-ins. www.crymod.com is the modding community for farcry - where you can get all the information outside of what i am able to tell you. From what ive seen farcry uses .ogg as its sound file format.

The c++ sdk IS coming...soon - as per alex at crymod. It was announced around christmas time - and was delayed since then. There is an sdk out now - but its lacking in documentation, and mostly LUA scripts.

Im looking for a variety of music styles, a mix of classical/hard rock, to cinematic types like the tracks from the metal gear solid games. You can contact me at my gmail account - majorpest@gmail.com if you would like, or if you use msn, pest2020@hotmail.com.

Thanks :D

Here is the first: a dark melodic intro evolving into a guitar riff. It's a demo: a basic mixdown into 128 bit mp3. No production, no variation, no structure, no mastering, just an example of the kind of stuff I feel would fit. It's getting late here, so I'll do some more tomorrow. My main site is getting a major overhaul with new php tool, so I have put it on my provider page:

users.pandora.be/do/music the bottom one.

i like it - up to where the drums pick up, i dont think the fast beats fit in too well. I like how right before the drums pick up, it sounds like an army marching. Im looking forward to hearing more. If you have msn, add me pest2020@hotmail.com it would be easier to keep in touch. Thanks :)

I don't do MSN, I do have IRC though. My website will be back up soon as well, I just got me a domain and a new host, and PHP support and stuff, to make site management easier. I will have a sample section up, with login and comment options.

It's to be expected that some stuff I come up with is to someones liking and some is not. I had very little time, so I really threw that together, and dumped it on the web. Today is no different, I just got home from work and it's 1almost 11 pm. It's not always like that, I am happy to say.

Normally song samples like that stay in fermentation for a few weeks, meaning that every day I open my WIP's and evaluate, change, complete them.

I will normally make like 30-40 one minute drafts, out of which I distill a number of ideas, good enough for 5-10 decent tracks and one or two above average (read amazing and brilliant :D) tracks, out of which the title track would normally be selected.

Just for illustration purposes, I'll rework the track. I like the clear comments you make, that makes life easier. The last 3 of 4 tracks have been trance and dance style music, so I imagine I'm still in techno mode :D

I put up a new version, dropped the beat and the chuggy guitars, went for a more electronic sound. It's all about the feeling you want to summon.

drop my creative director an email, marnixsalomons@gmail.com, he would like to speak to you - plus hes in the same timezone - so that makes things easier. I like the way its sounding so far - albeit a bit repetitive, but its only a sample song, and ill recognize it as such. If at all possible - try to get msn though, it makes communication so much easier.
