I am in the very early stages of development for a Civil War Era FPS. I have reviewed quite a few different possibilities for the engine and code elements of, but I am still really conflicted on the different choices between engines. Any suggestions on what I should look for to create the game?

Thanks, any input is appreciated.

Greetings Raccoon, You have to consider a number of things.

  1. What OS / Devices are you targeting. If you are just starting out, I suggest you target 1, your primary and if your game is really good think about the others later.
  2. What you know as far as development. Unity is probably the easiest and most forgiving with the most tutorials for newbies, while other engines may have other enhanced features, but require you to know a significantly greater knowledge of software development.
  3. What assets you are going to use for your game. 2D, 3D, where are you porting your assets from....etc.

Not all engines are created the same, and just because an engine is popular doesn't make it the best. I think of game engines as cars. The ford festiva might be the most popular, but it will never compare to a Porsche. However to drive a Porsche you have to be a little more seasoned :D

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely, Randell Trulson

Thanks Randall, right now I'm leaning towards UE4. Mostly because I have heard a lot of good things from fellow game devs and because of its small request of a cut of the gross income. Right now, I am targeting Windows users. I am using 3D assests, and I am actually looking for someone experienced in programs like Blender.
