Well, I'm not going to use Visual C++ for my Half-Life 2 mod (https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-ants OMG LOOKS PLZ) because it doesn't like my copy of Visual Basic, and I can't afford a proper copy. Therefore I'm going with the free compiler option. I've used Borland's free compiler before (http://www.borland.com/bcppbuilder/freecompiler/), but I haven't used it for Half-Life or HL2, and I'm not sure if it will work. Has anyone here used a free compiler before, and do you have any recommendations? --

You might have more luck with the free Microsoft command line compiler... |

Microsoft have a beta out of their Visual C++ 2005 compiler, download that, and you may or may not have any trouble. I don't know if non-Microsoft compilers work with HL1/2. |

Careful with that latest beta. Rumor has it that the stipulation is that they don't let you release any code to the public that is made using it. |

Thats a problem, and knowing Microsoft, its probably true. You can use the command line tool though, no IDE to power you along however, which can be a problem if you are a newbie to creating project files and in manual compilation. |
