Extensive DDoS Attacks Thread

Today, modDB was hit by a spoofed DDoS attack from over 3000 IPs. We have now blocked most of the attacking IP addresses, and installed a new system kernel, and modified a few pieces of software to run better under load.

Hopefully this will be the last attack, as there has been some bad slowdowns on the server over the past few weeks (you may have noticed page load times fluctuating alot).

Anyway, it should be fixed now.

people really should learn some basic net safety. XP ships with a basic firewall which closes unused ports and monitors for trojans ffs

When I get my PC up I'm setting up a damn firewall. I already am running a proxy in my browser and in IRC.

I have a firewall set up on my comp. It stopped a virus before!

Microsoft has suthdown the original windowupdate server to avoid a similar DDoS.

Did you report all the ips?

What exactly is a DDoS attack? whats the effect on ip's hitting it ?

A DDoS attack is a Distributed Denial of Service attack. Basically a trojan is put on as many PCs as possible (via. the usual trojan methods) which then sits idle until it receives a signal from a 'controller' (or more usually the computer's clock) at which point it will hit the specified computer, website or IP with everything it can in the hopes of bringing down the network. A common variant is the pingflood, where all infected computers will ping something (like moddb.com) a hundred or more times a second. One PC doing this isn't all that dangerous, but 3000, at a hundred a second, is pretty harsh on any system which trys to respond to them all.

you know this is really sad, lately i've noticed an increase of these kinds of "activities" and a lot of goods sites that go down permantly because of it

the pingflood isnt that hard to prevent... all you have to do is make your computer ignore ping requests... a number of ms servers do this

yeah but pinging a server is only 1 way to do it!
