This has got to be one of the worst natural disasters.

During drought, there is obviously no water. And as we in Australia have found, our farmers has next to no chance of getting crops to grow, or keeping livestock alive. So in affect, it is our food source and export trade which is being affected. Not to mention the lives.

And what good does money do? Sure you can save it for when the drought ends, or you can use it to try to find new methods to get water sources, but money doesn't actually bring rain and water directly to the farmers where it is needed most. I still reckon giving money to drought-relief charity is good because it gives the farmers hope, but really, it doesn't bring the rain.

Well at the moment we can't really do anything about the rain now can we? I've heard about some dude researching methods to form clouds over a certain area that causes rain, but I'm assuming that's just at the early stages of development or research and won't be seen for many years yet.

The only thing that really can be done is money, which is being done in Victoria, cos good old Bracksie has declared it a drought and money will be given to farmers. I think that's fair enough. I mean as you said, they provide us with some good, healthy food and they go out and risk their balls and money that rain will come so they can make enough to get some food on their table. It's not an easy job, so if the rain doesn't come, I think we should support them.

And as for Bracks, I really like the guy. I think he is the closest politician I've seen that actually resembles a normal, decent person. All the other ones are just too politician-like...if you know what I mean.

yeah its tough out there. imagine going 3 years without rain. now that is tough.

but yeah, last i heard, an incredible 13 million was raised last night for the farmers. that should help them battle it out

I saw something about that on the ABC a few months back... some guy in Tasmania is developing some technology that "seeds" the clouds and it rains/snows over certain areas.. apparently the the technology has been researched for a few years now and the tasmanians use this technology during winter to get higher falls of snow during the skiing season.

How about those fires over east... (i'm from perth)
Yesterday while conducting a navigation excorsise (i'm a pilot) i was flying back into Jandakot and noticed a small grass fire starting up. With in 2 minutes the fire had jumped 2 fire breaks and was tearing it's way through the paddock. As I overflew and began to circle the paddok i noticed cattle in the paddock and a man running about 2km from the homestead out into the paddock to heard the cattle into a nearby paddock away from the fire. While circleing my instructor dialed up perth radar (128.1mhz) on the vhf radio and told them about the fire and a rough location of it.
From what it looked like up in the air, the fire seemed to have started from a ciggarette but thrown from a car, lighting dry scrub on the side of the road.

Well thats my experience with a fire. Turns out that it burnt it's way though 4 paddocks because of the strong winds 30kts+. Apparently there was a bigger fire north of there at lancilin also started by a ciggarette butt i believe...
