QUICK OVERVIEW

If you are a pixel artist, here is a chance for you to get a free copy of BOH! If you simply prove to be very motivated and capable of producing the graphics of a theme for BOH itself, you immediately get a full digital copy of the game! And, as if that were not enough, if you manage to create particularly brilliant graphics, you will be rewarded also with a physical copy!

GRAPHICS

The graphics of a theme consist of:

  • a tiles set;
  • a sprites sheet;
  • a characters set;
  • a menu template;
  • a menu background (optional).

All graphics are intended to be used in a 320x240 screen/window (with 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x zooming). The bit depth can be any. Each file can have its own depth (and palette). The tiles and sprites should have a (mostly) "neutral" lighting, as the game employs dynamic lighting. It is strongly suggested to play the demo for a good understanding. All the details are described in the developer's manual, which has to be regarded as the first and foremost reference for the technical matters.

SETTING/STYLE

The setting/style of a new theme should be preferably one of the following (alphabetical order):

  • cyperpunk;
  • gothic;
  • historical (Greek/Mayan/Roman/etc.);
  • manga/anime;
  • mecha;
  • natural (forest/ice/mountain/sea/underwater/etc.);
  • post-apocalyptic;
  • prehistoric;
  • steampunk;
  • wild west.

The following settings/styles must be avoided because already covered by existing themes:

  • egyptian;
  • fantasy;
  • military;
  • sci-fi;
  • vectorial.

APPLICATION

To apply it is necessary to:

  1. fully understand this post;
  2. fully understand the technical aspects;
  3. choose a setting/style;
  4. post here a few preliminary tiles and sprites for the chosen setting/style (not the full sets, of course; providing also a link to a personal portfolio is a welcome plus).

ASSIGNMENT

  1. The artists that convince me with their entries will get the assignment.
  2. The evaluation of the submissions and the assignments will be done publicly here.
  3. The number of assignees is not fixed: it will depend on the quality and variety of the entries, and on my capability of following and assisting the development of themes.
  4. There is no deadline: the initiative is open until further notice.

DEVELOPMENT

  1. Assignees are free to use any tools of their choice.
  2. I will do my best to assist the development of themes (both here and privately), but assignees are required to first read thoroughly the developer's manual.
  3. I will take care of the audio part of themes.
  4. Assignees are requested to provide (here or privately) development status updates at least on a weekly basis.
  5. I will post here (information about) the final result of development.

REWARDS

  1. Assignees get a full digital version of the game as soon as they get the assignment.
  2. Assignees of complete (inclusive of menu background) and very beautiful themes will also be awarded with a physical copy, which will be mailed to them at no cost as soon as possible.

RIGHTS, DUTIES AND OTHER RULES

  1. Artists grant that they have full rights to the material they submit.
  2. Artists keep their rights on the material they submit.
  3. Assignees who complete their themes will be fully credited both in the theme they contributed to (the credits appear in the game menu) and in the user's manual.
  4. Assignees who complete their themes agree to the inclusion of their material in both freely downloadable update packages and future releases of the whole game.
  5. Assignees are free to redistribute and/or reuse their material at will.
  6. Assignees must complete in a month the themes they have have been assigned and for which they have received the game.
  7. Assignees who, regardless of the reason, fail to complete their themes (in time), will have to delete all the instances of the game, in any shape or form, they are in possess of.
  8. Assignees must not redistribute the game.
  9. Only one artist per theme is allowed.
  10. I have the final say on all matters.

MISCELLANEOUS

Please use this thread to ask for clarifications, make suggestions, comment submissions, etc.
Note that the images included here are slightly outdated because the game was updated subsequently: for an actual reference, please look at the latest theme files included in the demo/game.
