On friday i turned off my car and herd what sondind like a gun shot. It quickly became clear that my car must have back fired (It was a freak acurence because it never happened before or since.) well hafter that I had to go to work. as I was travling I noticed my car seemed louder when i got to work I began looking at the under side of my car. i saw that my muffler had split opened.(must of been because of the back fire or It splitting open was what I think was a back fire) Now I am going to have to replace it. But in reality it is not bad at all. with out the muffler I have noticed an increess in the amout of power my car has:D. This is do to the fact that with out the muffler exost is able to exit easier. The Increess In power also leads to beter gas milage since the engine dosent need to work as hard to produce the same amout of power. To bad it is a law that cars need mufflers otherwise i would leave it as is. so anything bad happened to you which turrned int a good thing. -- "I may not know anything but at least I am smarter then 90% of the people out there." Well, without a muffler, your car would be hella loud driving down the street as well. I hate cars that run down my street in the middle of the night with loud engines and wake me up -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Actully it is not that much louder. it is only twice as loud at the most. there are plenty of motarcyles that I have seen with a louder engine. -- "I may not know anything but at least I am smarter then 90% of the people out there." Well, that's just because their engine is out in the open, not covered by anything more than a few bars of metal -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Well the only reason mufflers are really there is for cleaner air --

A new muffler only costs a couple hundred dollars. Just buy a new one. It'll help you in the long run -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

i would dent up your exhaust to give it that low rumbling noise like muscle cars have --

Yeah, me too. My mom said that if my dad didn't teach me how to drive, she'd find a Driving Service. You know, where you drive around in somebody else's car as they teach you how to drive before you go to Driver's Ed? Not my idea of fun -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

thats what ive been doing for about 2 months once a week Thats HOW you learn to drive here, you take driving lessons with an instructor, do about 30 lessons, then do a driving test woo got your license, get a car, thats you set Ofcourse during the driving lessons you can ask a family member to give extra practice but my dad doesn't trust me in his car -- Nothing. |

We sort of do that as well. Of course, I have to wait until I'm 17 (I'll probably take my Driver's Ed course after I'm 17) in order to have a full license, to be able to drive any time of the day. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Mufflers dont clean the air coming out of the engine the only damping the noise. It is the catlic converter(not sure how to spell it) that cleans the air. It needs to be replaced after a really long time because the chemical it uses gets used up. you normally only have to worry about that if you are keeping the car for likt 15 plus years. luckly I dont have to worry since my car is a 73 ant the did not start puting those on cars until 75. to bad for the people behind me since the choke on my exust. -- "I may not know anything but at least I am smarter then 90% of the people out there." The muffler reduces and changes engine exhaust sound and tone. When properly matched to the engine, a muffler will not impair engine performance due to exhaust backpressure, which is simply the resistance to exhaust flow. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

I bought my 73 Buick Electra 225 for $0 and have spent about $2100 on gas, inspection, fixing, insurance, new windsheild. My insurance is only $75 a month because my car "has no value" In reality in its current condition it is worth $1000. though any non antique car in the same condition would be worth like $200 or less -- "I may not know anything but at least I am smarter then 90% of the people out there."
