UPDATES

10/12/13

For ScreenshotSaturday we posted a couple of gifs on our website. Here is the website: Devblog

What we are showing below is our Aspect system in action. Aspects are like spells that enhance your character in various ways. When you pick up an Aspect you will have the option of socketing it into either the weapon, armor, or spell of the character. Each has a different effect so there will be a lot of room for experimenting with different builds.

So, this forum didn't like my gifs. I uploaded them on imgur and have provided the links below. They are worth it!

This first one is what we're tentatively calling the Chaos Aspect socketed to a spell.

This second Aspect gives a slow fall effect when players hold down the spell cast button.

Hey everyone! I thought today would be a good day to post up some of our early gameplay footage. We've only been developing for a short period of time but this footage is very representative of where we are at right now.

Thanks for taking a look!

Original Post

Hey guys! I've been here for a little while and decided it was time to share with you the game me and a small group of developers, known as Hapa Games, have been working on for the past few months. I hope you like it. I will be updating here with new information as our development continues. Any feedback is very, very welcome! Thanks for taking a look :)

Ascendant is a 2.5D side-scroller that combines the depth and randomness of roguelikes, and the fast-paced action of beat 'em ups, with the ability to convert enemies to fight with you. As the world around you succumbs to the power of an older, tryannical god, you a minor demigod, have the power to gather an army of followers and oppose him and his zealots.

Winter level concept

Combat
Combat is brawler based in that players will be able to use a wide variety of weapons, air and ground based combos, and spells to defeat the multitude of enemies attempting to thwart the demigod. After performing an excellent combo string there will be a chance that enemies could switch their allegiance and fight for the player. Enemies that are converted have the same fighting pattern but follow the player around and get the added bonus of the player's equipped Aspect.

Early in-game screenshot of Winter. Still a lot of work to do.

Aspects
Aspects are a kind of socket system that either actively enhances a player's weapon, spell, or armor, or passively increases particular stats by being consumed. A simple example would be by picking up a Fire Aspect and applying it to the player's weapon. Now that player would have a fire DOT that is applied to enemies every time they are hit.

Variations of the basic enemy type

Events
Similarly to other roguelikes, Ascendant will have a random event system. These random encounters will give players a chance at obtaining items that they otherwise would not have access to. Some events will have require certain things to be met before they can be completed while others can happen instantaneously. An example of this would be like a Pit of Sacrifice where the player must hurl a follower into a bottomless pit in order to get an item. Another example would be activating a series of altars over the course of the game in order to spawn a special boss.

Going Forward
There are many other things that we are working on which will be sharing with you here and across all of the other platforms we are active on. We know there is a ton more work that we have to do but are trying out best to make this game as awesome as it can be. Like I said, if you have any comments, feedback, or whatever, please let us know and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

You can see more screenshots, concept art, and information about our game as it is being developed on any of these other forums and sites:

Nice style, very smooth play. Maybe you could have the life bars fade out when you're not hit for awhile or enemies are out of range.

Hi guys, sorry for the delayed response.

@scott: That gif is from a very long time ago, haha. We have gotten rid of all enemy health bars and increased the speed of the gameplay by a considerable amount. Check out the newest video here.

@colony: Our build is in a playable state, yes. We have a number of beta testers from our KS campaign that have priority though so we are trying to finish a few things before sending it out at the end of the month.
