Any interest in a turn based mod for HL2? (Forums : Ideas & Concepts : Any interest in a turn based mod for HL2?) Locked

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to get a mod off the ground for some time now and I came across an idea to make a turn-based RTS hybrid game.

The game would feature two or more competing teams of soldiers. Players take turns ordering their units in a real-time environment. Every turn, players get 10 seconds to make all the commands they'd like during that turn. This way, I think I can get the frantic gameplay found in RTS games while slowing it down just enough to allow players to regroup and fully evaluate the battle when waiting for their opponent to finish.

If anyone is further interested, I have a preliminary design document which is roughly 40% finished.

The project would be fairly interesting for team members since its considerably different from other HL2 mods out there. It would be a good opporunity for modders who would like to explore what the source engine can do and just how much you can change it.

Could someone please give feedback on the idea? Anything would be welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Need the design doc first, but it sounds good.

I just sent the word file to get converted into a .pdf file. I should be able to post it soon enough.

Why don't you just convert it to a plain text file?
Or use HTML if the design doc has pictures.

Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

Do you mean like in Warhammer?

Also if you made it Resistance vs Combine vs Alien or whatever that would be vvvveeeerrryyy cool! You could command Striders onto the battlefield! Sweet!

I wanted to make a turn-based game like Final Fantasy Tactics on the PC, but you might beat me to the punch by the time I've learned how to. lol

Lol, yeah I should have thought of that. It was about 3am when I wrote my reply. At any rate, I'll hold on the design doc for now since it isn't finished and some parts have some mixed ideas in there. I'll finish and proof read then post it. I think it would say something about my comittment vis-a-vis the project if I released a half-assed design doc.

Never played Warhammer. But from what I understand of that board game, it might be along similar lines.

Actually the theme and environment of the mod hasn't been decided yet. I thought it would be better for me to concentrate on designing the fundamentals of the gameplay and once a few people joined then we would collectively vote on a theme. I'm partial to future warfare myself, maybe 20 years down the line. It would allow the team some breathing room to be creative but also let them draw on modern times for inspiration. Giant walkers would be sweet though...
