What did you guys think of this news item, which mixed a bit of advertising with a bit of content?

Moddb.com wrote: Before I get onto the real news, a game which is presently sponsoring the all new Mod Database download server has just been released! This game (in-case you haven't seen the ads is Splinter Cell). In return for generating hype, we are pulling in a few bucks, so if your interested in this game, be sure to head around to there site, catch a few awesome in-game vids and support the Mod Database in doing so!

Moving onto the real news at hand, incase you haven't heard this is our sites new server specs.

  • Dual 2.4GHz Xeons[*]1024MB RAM[*]2 x 250GB Drives[*]Dual Integrated NICs

With such a beast of a server and a download system only a month or so from completion, we need mod teams to get intouch who want to give it a shot. So if your interested send me a PM. I'll select a few at random and give you the details once I have them. If everything goes to plan it should be up and running in a months time. Of course nothing goes to plan, but lets just hope it does :D

Is that acceptable? I'm just trialling it out this once.. see how it goes. If people object i won't do it, just testing out ways of bringing in the dough required to pay for the server :D

I don't mind it and it earns a bit of money, which has to be a good thing right.

Thats my logic, but still unlike most sites on the web, we dont care about making a profit, we are here for the visitors so if they don't approve we'll come up with other good ways to earn the dough for the d/l server :D

i think linking up with a game is possibly the best way to pull in more visitors as well as gaining money. shame it has to be an EA game :P

Well if making a bit of money can improve the members experience then it is probably a good idea. Also glad to see the d/l server back up or at least in the pipeline.

I agree with embers, that this is most likely the best way to make money to help out with site costs. I know hosting is settled, but for this download server and for anything in the future that may benefit Mod Database this is a very good thing. I think you might as well throw a couple more upcoming games up there, I know I wouldn't mind and I don't think the members of Mod Database would have a problem with seeing Mod Database hosting an ad for a game.
