This is an idea I've been thinking about for a while now; my idea is a combination third-person shooter and a space flight simulator. A basic outline of my idea is that the player takes on the role of an amateur space pirate trying to begin his empire. He starts off with a handful of fellows, a small ship, and a tiny base in an asteroid field. Every game would be procedurally generated, and the goal would be to become the most powerful pirate in space. I know it's just a rough outline, but what do people think?

Online or singleplayer?

How would the main map look? Just a 1st/3rd person kind of map like in Skyrim, with an option to open a map and fast travell to certain spots, or rather something like in M&B Warband or Might&Magic where the player moves his party by clicking on a spot on the map?

How would the combat system be? Could you control single spaceships only, or entire fleats?

I like the general concept, however I think this is lacking information. :)

Well, my idea was to allow the player to pass time, a la XCOM. And I was thinking that the player would have the ability to choose between controlling the 'mothership,' which is the hub for the player's forces in space raids, or to take out a fighter and lead a squadron in dogfighting. The player, in order to board an enemy's ship in space, would have to do so much damage to it, such as destroying the engines and knocking out the weapons. Once these were done, the player would lead a boarding party on the ship in third-person shooter-style squad-based combat.

Also, the player would be able to upgrade his base as he moved alone; from an asteroid, to a base on a barren planet, to a base on a populated planet, to complete and utter control over a planet. The player would be able to engage in diplomacy with other pirates and crime lords, and would be able to develop a 'crew' of officers that could be used either in the management of his piratical empire or in actual combat itself. I am very strongly considering putting together a very basic 'design document' to prove what I mean.
