Shinobi '87 is a pistol-replacement vanilla mod themed around Sega's Shinobi arcade game. You take control of the highly skilled ninja, Joe Musashi, as he finds himself drawn into mortal combat with hellish monsters. Resolute as ever and with plenty of shuriken to spare, he sets out on an epic journey to confront the darkness steadily infesting Earth.

Description : A vanilla-compatible pistol replacement patch based upon the Shinobi games, specifically the original arcade. This WAD file includes alternate graphics and sounds for a new shuriken weapon, all of which were taken from the arcade. To change the size of the shuriken, use DeHackEd to change the first letter for the strings "PLSS" and "PLSE" to a "Z", "Y", "X", "W", or "U" (largest to smallest). To change the sound of the shuriken hitting, use DeHackEd to change the first letter of the string "flamst" to a "f" or "z".
In addition, this WAD file comes with 2 additional WADs for music (shinobibeats.wad) and widescreen support (s-wide.wad) along with two DeHackEd patches. "shinobi.deh" simply replaces the pistol with shurikens while doubling the speed and attack power of the fist. "shinobi-infinite.deh" also replaces the pistol with shurikens but the supply is unlimited while the fist's attack power remains unchanged. The "shinobi2.deh" and "shinobi-infinite2.deh" files function the same as their counterparts while replacing the plasma rifle with shurikens launched at a slightly faster rate. Finally, "s-wide.wad" has 5 widescreen variants of the base title screen which can be toggled with an WAD editor like Slade 3.
Story: Moments after defeating the Masked Ninja at the end of the first game, Joe Musashi watches as the gravely wounded Zeed leader, in desperation, uses a forbidden ninja spell that summons the forces of Hell to eliminate his former disciple turned nemesis. However, the Hellspawn prove to be too chaotic to control and they begin to indiscriminately destroy everything in their path. Seeing their evil corrupt and possess the slain Zeed soldiers, Joe, resolute as ever and with plenty of shuriken to spare, sets out to annihilate the demonic hordes before they can overtake Earth. With the Oboro Clan's honor at stake, he will not fail.

I had never heard of the game but seeing Go Nagai's name attached to it does intrigue me. Definitely seems like something worth looking into.

Thanks. These sprite sheets can make great reference art for creating new graphics. I'm currently working on a much bigger project right at the moment, but I do hope to come back to this mod and update it with new weapons and other features.
