The release archive of our third competition, Escape From Black Mesa!
After a month of mapping, judging, and scoring, the results of LambdaBuilds' second competition, Escape From Black Mesa, are now available!
Entrants had four weeks to design an eerie "escape" map where tension was key as well as the setting of Black Mesa and Half-Life's designs. Points were awarded based on the visual fidelity, gameplay mechanics, and adherence to the theming.
This archive contains the raw files and BSPs of the entries in the competition as a historical record of the maps at the time of submission, but you can also download them from the workshop here: Steamcommunity.com
Keep in mind the workshop entries may be updated over time and may no longer reflect the actual entry to the competition at the time.
The entries not archived here at current are Survivor and Biodome.
The winners are as follows:
Two entries were also selected as Honourable Mentions:
4th Place: Imposter, by Dolmo
5th Place: Shadows, by OnTheMatter
In total we had thirty entrants - thanks everyone who entered and stay tuned for the next LambdaBuilds competition!
How to install the Escape from Black Mesa Maps?
Copy to episode 2 folder.
Detritus - I did everything, still stuck. Fuel is red and I don't even know which one is fuel.
My impressions of all maps.
Abyss - very good and compelling.
Biotech - my personal favourite. I wish there would be entire mod like this.
Black Horror - very weak participant. Feels like prerelease version.
Black Mesa Communications - it's... ok I guess. Feels like even creator didn't know what to do with it. Ending is just black screen after we make a loop.
Cargo Escape - it's just bad. I'm disappointed that level of mapping allowed in this compilation.
Central Stat\Grand Terminal - couldn't find crowbar, but generally nice map. And that ***** monster, nice reference.
Detritus - I like what I see but I completely stuck. Turn on everything from switches to valves, still no response. Fuel is red.
Escape in Darkness - good, but it isn't fun when zombies, bullsquids and vorts suddenly became lads just to gang on me.
Escape Newman - ending anyone?
Fluid Logistics - bugged for me, map keeps showing me HEV-zombie and that's all.
Frightened Guard - once again, why even add this to compilation?
Health Research and Manufacturing - that was interesting. Collection room gives a vibe. But two buttons with same effect feels useless.
Imposter - pretty sus map. I give it 5/6 found artefacts.
Informal Induction - Good. Puzzle based. New mechanics. Probably next favourite after Biotech.
Labs\X-Labs - "No, we have BMRF at home". Also, keycard didn't work.
Lambda: Dark Secret - couldn't finish. Doesn't care. Awful weaponless gameplay. Couldn't even trigger the ending.
Lights Out - simple and nice.
Limbo - couldn't find out how to destroy brick wall (at this point read about this) but overall nice map.
Little Red Star - yeah, I can definitely see why this is TOP3.
Lost Hope - it's ok map. Kinda what I expected to be a low bar.
Sector E - the whole screwdriver\key mechanic became repetitive fast.
Shadows - nice. Nothing special, but nice. I like horror aspect.
Strashnaya Karta\Parabolic Boxhole - small puzzle map. I like it, but "crack on a wall" part absolutely unclear.
Tevatron Station - "Why is so nice map at the end of the list? Oh, it's unplayable".
The Xenian - like Grand Terminal, but better.
The Chamber - another buggy for me, can't move at all.
Also, where Biodome, Survivor, Lockdown, Fluorescent? Those maps aren't part of the archive.
Not for Episode 2, these are for Black Mesa
I've downloaded it but no install instructions!
I put the folder under my Black Mesa folder, but it doesn't show up under Workshop items or Steam library.
Edit: For those wondering where to install, copy all the subfolders into your Black Mesa folder. Start Black Mesa. Open console. Type "map <mapname>" and Enter. A list of available maps should be in your Black Mesa/Maps folder if you did everything correctly.
