This is amazing. You actually make the whole game playable and enjoyable! Congrats! :D
There's 2 issues that I'd like to report since it doesn't say in your "remaining-issues". First, in Unforeseen Consequences, the scientists falling down the elevator casually greet you.
And second, in Xen, when you kill the houndeyes, they float in a very weird way and get stuck in the air: Puu.sh

I kept getting this "Node graph out of date, rebuilding" text,
after every loading screen.
is there a way to turn that off or fix it?

You'll only get that message the first time you load up each map, so it's not a huge deal. Just load each map and let the graphs rebuild and you won't get the message on them in the future.

Hello, can I just copy-paste the files into the main folder to be able to use this with Gmod? Or maybe I can replace only the files that are outside the vpk packages and put others in "custom" folder

You need to use fov_desired (insert number).

First of all, this is a great mod. The problem is that to my understanding fov_desired isn't a viable command.

This doesn't go beyond 90° though, right?
In vanilla Half-Life: Source
I used this guide to expand the FOV beyond 90°
Steamcommunity.com

But in this version the reference cells aren't there / are moved.
Do you have any idea where those references are,
or in general how to exceed 90° FOV?
Thanks.

Hello,

I'm noticing that under the Video settings, I can only choose up to Medium Shadow Quality. Is this something you're planning on fixing, or is this an issue on my end? Likely I'll just fix this in console in the meantime

Additionally, my video settings (and presumably other ones, haven't tried em yet) keep resetting every launch. Is this a known issue? If so, how do I fix it?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
BloodyMuffin Author
BloodyMuffin - - 193 comments

I have absolutely no idea why you can not choose a higher shadow quality, but I will look into it.

As for your video settings being reset, i believe this is caused by the mod reverting back to DirectX 81 every time it launches. It can be fixed by opening up autoexec.cfg and removing the line "mat_dxlevel 81". However, this will cause the issues with the messed up weapon materials and shiny textures to return. Until I can get the materials to work properly on DirectX 9 or find another workaround for DirectX 81 then I do not know what else to do.

Cool mod, do you plan on fixing the weird vertical recoil and poor accuracy of the SMG?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

Yes. Though since I think the weird recoil might have been intentional on Valve's part, I plan on adding an option to turn the weird recoil back on.

To whoever posted a comment asking me for help getting the mod to work, I am sorry but I accidentally deleted your comment by pressing the wrong button and not realizing it until it was to late.

In response to your comment.

Did you extract the zip file into your steam/steamapps folder so that your directory structure is steam/steamapps/h!s_fix? Also are you on Windows or Linux?

Do you plan on updating and patching out the remaining issues found on "remaining-issues.txt"?

Also I found a bug where the main security guard sitting at the front desk in Anomalous Materials stands up on the table if I go to the next loading area near the break room and then return back to the front desk. This bug isn't a thing in the current Steam HL:S version but it is present in this mod.

I do plan on updating this mod to fix those issues as well as other bugs I found since release.

I believe the reason this issue is not present in the original is because Valve used a custom scripted_sequence entity in HL:S and I have not yet managed to update my scripted_sequence to fix this.

BloodyMuffin, I sincerely respect and admire all the effort you have put in this mod, but the instructions of getting this to work are some of the worst I have seen on the internet for years.

Where is the sourcemods directory? Somebody mentioned you have to install "source 2013" first, where do I get this from?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
BloodyMuffin Author
BloodyMuffin - - 193 comments

The sourcemods directory should be under your steamapps directory, for example, steam/steamapps/sourcemods. If it is not there then you can just create one.

As for source 2013, that actually should not be necessary for this mod and I don't have it installed at all. I believe that it is used for standalone mods that do not require you to own any other source game. In that case you would need to install source 2013 in order to get the base content.

I actually already got it working based on your March 8th comment under summary and played the game through. Those instructions were good and clear enough. I would recommend that you involve these instructions into the patch as a .txt file for example, you would have less answering to do.

As for the game, here are some of the bugs/differences that I encountered compared to original HL1.

I played the source version on max graphics (like the original), but when I closed the game and opened it again, many if not all graphics settings were reset, so each time I had to put them to the max again.

I more often than not shot through houndeyes, not doing any damage to them. It seems the only certain time when the bullet didn't just go through was when they were charging for the attack. Also, it took 3 hits with the basic handgun to kill them, compared to 4 in original HL1 (I played both on the hardest difficulty). I occasionally also shot through other enemies, I spotted that happening with a barnacle and a few vortigaunts, but it happened much less than with houndeyes.

I didn't take any damage from turret machine guns when I was ducking. Didn't notice it with other enemies.

In original HL1, if you picked up grenades (or any ammo in this case, it seems), any extra grenades over 10 went to waste. In source, you only pick up the amount of grenades you need to get to 10 and any extra stays on the ground for picking up later. I actually like this one, though it makes the game a bit easier.

In the level where you first meet Gargantua, there is a broken pipe spewing out fire. This fire didn't do any damage to me or to vortigaunts.

In Residue processing, there are three parallel flow lines with compressors above them. When you press the button, the compressors stopped indefinitely. In original HL1, there was a time limit for that. Also, I had some bug in this level so that I couldn't load the saved game. I had to restart from the beginning of the level and play it through in one sitting without dying or loading.

In Questionable ethics, the game crashed when I climbed out of the pipe. I think it happened only once though.

That's all I could spot. Thank you for the work done.

I do intend to add better install instructions in the next update.

As for the bugs you encountered.

The issue with graphics settings being reset is because the mod reverts to using DX8 everytime it is loaded. I do this because certain materials work better on DX8, like the weapon chroming and the overly shiny textures. I am not yet sure how to resolve this issue.

The houndeyes have a messed up hitbox. The next update fixes this.

I believe changes to weapon damage may have been intentional on Valve's part, though I have gotten some complaints about Gonarch taking far to many hits to kill so I will be looking closer at that.

I will look into the issue with the turrets. Is it all turrets or only certain types?

I'm pretty sure weapon pick ups not going to waste was an intentional change.

I will fix the issue with the fire not doing any damage. This game has so many small issues spread throughout the game that it can be really difficult finding some of them. As for this one, I always just assumed the fire would hurt and avoided it.

I think stopping the compressors indefinitely was intentional so I will likely leave that alone.

I never had an issue with save games in this level but I will try to figure out what it was.

I have noticed a couple of issues with crashes when a new map loads, but it is rare and I haven't figured out the cause yet.

Thank you for bringing me these issues.

Now when you mentioned Gonarch, it reminded me that was indeed the case. I used up like half of all the ammo I had to kill it, way more than in the original HL1. Meanwhile I discovered that on Half-life.fandom.com it is written "Also due to a current bug, crossbow bolts and explosives cannot damage the Gonarch; the player has to rely on bullet-firing and energy weapons." This just might be the case. In original HL1 I remember that using crossbow on Gonarch was quite effective, on each shot some green blood was also spewing out. In source version however, hitting Gonarch with a crossbow just induced a metallic sound and sparks, no blood. Didn't seem to do any damage whatsoever.

Regarding turrets, I definitely remember it happening with the one in the end of training (I think it comes out of the ceiling when you shoot friendly NPCs) and with this one here: Youtu.be

About saving in Residue processing - pretty sure I discovered this problem when I had stopped the compressors, then I saved, then I tried to load and it didn't work. So maybe it had something to do with stopping the compressors.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

You need to place the mod in your steam/steamapps directory then restart steam. The mod should then appear in your steam library. If it doesn't then you can try placing it in the Half-Life 2 directory and then launching Half-Life Source with the launch parameter "-game hls_fix" (without the quotes).

The soda cans' hitboxes are to small to collide with the player. The next version of the mod will increase the size of their hitboxes so you can drink them.

I didn't do anything at all. I just walked in and my game froze for a bit when the ichthyosaur was about to bite the scientist (The screen freezing isn't actually a problem with the game. My computer does that sometimes when I'm playing source games since it's not the best computer). I jumped into the water and it was exactly like that.

Have you tried loading an earlier save? It might be possible that your computer freezing interrupted the sequence. I will look into trying to make the sequence uninterruptable but since my computer doesn't do that it will be difficult to test if it was caused by the freezing.

I don’t know if the environment maps are just there in the game files to be there or if they were broken from Steampipe and were replaced with the “DirectX9 shine effect” just as a side-effect of the update. I could be wrong though.
