This train is inbound from Level 3 Dormitories, to Sector C Test Labs, and Control Facilities. This Halloween, un-buckle your tram seatbelt and make your way into the renovated Sector C laboratories for testing! This demo includes the first 3 chapters from the main game for at least half an hour of content. Plus in addition to the campaign, the demo includes three bonus maps and The Hazard Course!
Like with Version 3 of the classic demo, this demo includes an extra folder with images to customize steam with, along with additional instructions for Linux and a screenshot of the Steam Deck's bindings.
I'm very happy to get this demo out to you all! I'd love to hear any feedback on what I should improve or even ideas for the full game. So please feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts, I will try to check them often and even respond.
Also while I had two friends test the demo and I even tested it myself several times, it may still have a few bugs. Please comment of any bugs you encounter and I will fix them by the next update or the full game release.
Hope you all enjoy this short little campaign demo, and I can't wait to get the full game out to you all! I still don't have an ETA for when about it might release, but as of writing this I'm at the half-way point in the story and I have so many ideas for the rest of it.
How do I play this? I put the files in sourcemods, yet the search function can't find this demo.
You unzip the file, and inside you should have two folders, "Half-Alive-Halloween-Demo", and "Halloween-Demo-Steam-Artwork + Controller Config".
Place "Half-Alive-Halloween-Demo" inside sourcemods on your C drive and make sure you have Portal installed. Then just restart Steam.
You can place the steam artwork folder wherever you'd like, heck you can throw it away if you have no need for it.
The same instructions apply to the latest Hazard Course demo, except the file names are different.
How do I do the 3rd jump in the training course? I've tried so many times but I can't seem to do it.
Run and jump off the platform, then hold crouch mid-air. This gives you just a bit more air-time.
This was amazing! I would like to note that puzzle with the moving platform and rocket turret had me tearing my hair out, just due to how easy it was to fall off and die. I had to save after every jump just to get through it. It would be nice if there were some more charging/healing stations throughout the testing course, perhaps in BTS areas if the test is intended to be deadly canonically.
I can't wait to see this polished up and finished! <3
I'll definitely keep difficulty in mind while I try to remaster/add more tests to the opening of the game. The suit chargers are very interesting in Portal, since the turrets can drain it incredibly quickly. It doesn't help the fact that the game auto-regens health, it practically renders the chargers useless! Heh
If you want to remove the automatic regeneration, and get quite a few other fixes related to combining Portal with Half-Life 2, you can use this mod as a base for yours (although it is a little sketchy, licensing-wise seeing as it includes unreleased Portal code).

Notably, this fixes the crash with using the Gravity Gun to launch props through Portals!
I had made a build of Half-Alive that ran in the Source SDK so that I could better implement Half-Life 2's mechanics, but it probably would have needed some more work to get everything working correctly. There were strange audio and visual glitches when I made that build, not to mention it required having Portal and the SDK installed in order to get the mod to work. In the end it's just simpler for me and for the end user for it to just be a Portal mod, even if I have to suffer some limitations like no combine, or regenning health.
I just realized I never posted the link. I think you should check it out. It actually works pretty well. Portal is fully playable in it, so compatibility is really good. (The link is added to my last comment now)
