Ever wanted Sakharov to aid you in disabling the Miracle Machine and Brain Scorcher? Or maybe you wanted Doctor to be reunited with Strelok? This mod aims to help with that.
Through modifying most of the 'character_desc_[location].xml' files, I gave a dialogue option to at least most of the unique NPCs that allows you to recruit them as your companions, such as Cold, Sakharov, Doctor, Wolf, the Barkeep and many more.
Put this at the lowest priority in your mod loading. I'd hate it if one of your other installed mods have some of their files overwritten and then don't work (or crash the game) because of this silly addon.

axr_companions.ltx was modified to extend the companion limit. If you don't like how the limit was upped to 50, you can always modify the number (or delete the file).
Note: As heartbreaking as it is, the game forbids you from recruiting Sidorovich as a companion. You also cannot recruit Forester. There may be more but it should typically only be the traders that don't move around in any capacity.
I am also not at fault if you break the economy with the traders by taking their items, selling those items to them that you just stole and then taking it back.

could this potentially break the story mode?
If a necessary story character dies, most likely. It would be best if you used addons that made characters invincible, but I think that most of those characters cannot die when only story mode is enabled.
I really want to install this addon so badly but when I try to download the addon, there's an error that pops up and there's nothing else I can really do about it.
What should I do??

Can you not implement a "special" stalker that uses the Forester and Sid models but function as a companion instead? Sure, you might end up with clones roaming about, but the Zone has weirder stuff in it.
Probably. I might need to reconfigure the motions of the models (which is fairly simple) because I have no idea if their current models work fine in combat situations
