Install Trinity Version Mods

Trinity versions include the original game and the Diplomacy, Entrenchment expansions.

For reasons we have yet to understand, SOA2 suffers from the dreaded 1st run crash which can be anywhere between a couple seconds after start, or well after an hour of play. This only happens when the mod is enabled through the in-game menu and only requires a game restart with the mod enabled to fix.

I am working on a small exe file people can keep on their desktop which will start SoaSE with SOA2 enabled without issues. myfist0

Extracting

Community made mods are shared by uploading a compressed archive to a file hosting service like FileFront or ModDB. Once you have selected and downloaded the mod, it will require a program to open the mod for extraction.

7-Zip (free open source)
WinRAR (trial)
WinZip (trial constant pop-ups)

Once you are able to open the compressed archive and view the files and folder inside it is time to find where to place your new mod.

Where do I install the Mods?

The easiest way to find where to place the mod is through the game menu. Select "Options" in the main menu the select "Mods" then "Show Mod Path". Pressing "Show Mod Path" should create the folder if there is not one already.

Options Button Mods Button Show Mod Path Button

Win 7 / Vista

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\...

Win XP

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\...

There are 3 different games in Trinity, each with there own folder for different updates.

  • Sins of a Solar Empire --> ...\Mods-vX.XX
  • Sins of a Solar Empire Entrenchment --> ...\Mods-Entrenchment vX.XX
  • Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy --> ...\Mods-Diplomacy vX.XX

Sins Mods are very specific to version and expansion type.

vX.XX is the version of the selected expansion. There may be multiple folders for different versions of each upgrade. Place the mod in the most current version folder only if the mod was made for that version of that expansion. Older version folders or the mods in them are no longer used by the game.
