i buy comercial games SOLELY to play mods generally (except for the battlefield series)
how is it that with some comm. games something better and more playable gets released by a nobody, wtf, E.G. "user made L4D careers" and "research and development"
Mods, but it's pretty close with commercial games. When it comes to commercial games I usually stick to my tried and true favorite series', where as with mods I'll generally try anything that seems the least bit interesting, since they're free. ;) I don't play very many indie games since more often than not indie games end up being puzzle or platform games which I'm not into. But if I do find an indie game that peaks my interest I'll usually buy it since they're cheap, plus it's always good to support the little guys. I don't have a single game on my phone and I only play flash games when I'm extremely bored. I'd like to note though that one of my favorite games is a free, non-flash browser based game, so that doesn't really fit into any of these categories.
I've always argued that mods are really more "indie" than indie games. Indie game developers at least have some money to either buy a game engine or develop their own, and they might be able to do a little advertising. Mod makers are just people in their rooms and basements with no money, a computer, and a dream. :) Indie game developer is kinda the next step up.
It usually goes one of three ways:
Mod maker--> Indie game developer--> Commercial game developer
Mod maker--> Commercial game developer
Mod maker--> Indie game developer
Please don't think I'm trying to say mod makers have less skill than the other two. They just usually have the least amount of resources. At any rate, I have respect for anyone, mod, indie, or commercial game developer who makes a good game that they put their heart into.
"Mod makers are just people in their rooms and basements with no money" -
I don't necessarily agree with that. Most mod makers are more hobbyists; it is just something they enjoy doing. Alot of mods cost alot of money believe it or not (although, indeed, not as much as indie or commercial).
I think I came off sounding the wrong way when I said mod makers have no money, etc., etc. I meant that I think a lot of mod makers would make indie games and try to make a living off of them if they had the money and resources to do it. But you're right, a lot of mod makers are just hobbyists who do it for fun and not because they necessarily hope to sell a game of their own some day.
Mods. When a new commercial game has been released (which is worth to buy it, the last commercial game I played was GTAIV...), I play it through once without mods. Then I have some fun with mini-mods which only change some code values and then later I play it with total-conversions.
"Mod makers are just people in their rooms and basements with no money"
I don't agree with that either. For me, developing mods is a hobby (I'm a 3d- and texture-artist). I have fun with being creative. But sometimes I need a break from modding (like now :D). I can't imagine to archive the status of a commercial game developer. Indie dev, maybe. But I don't want to earn money with mods or games.
Also, even mods are expensive. Many people don't know that. You have to rent FTPs and probably buy some software. But the most expensive part is, you have to spent time - a lot of time :o)
Hmm, I voted mods, But i really mean both mods and indie games.
I guess i play mods more, But that's because some indie games that are out don't seem to appealing to my liking, Sorry if I discouraged you, But Keep going!
Well, I play games that have competitiveness to them the most, mostly CS:S as is now. Used to be alot of the old cs before then, even before 1.6, which was a mod at that time. So yeah mod gone commercial really. And then I play DotA alot, which I think classifies as a mod to be honest.
Same for me. You can't have a mod without a commercial, at least most of the time. I enjoy playing Vietnam | Glory Obscured and Battlefield Vietnam just as much as each other and ones a mod and ones a commercial...
I love all the hl2 mods, and I would play them, but only if there were large fan bases, especially in australia/NZ they lack players, so I cant just jump on a server let alone enough play competitively (clans ect).
So I stick with valves commercial games.
Commercial games. Even as a modder, I know that 99% of the time, commercial games are many times better than most mods could ever be. Although there are some pretty impressive mods out there.
Considering the amount of time I spend playing Insurgency and Garry's Mod I'd say mods... wait, but does Gmod count as a commercial game because I bought it? And what does that classify DoD:S and CSS as?
50/50 on commercial games & mods. Currently playing Halo 2 & HAWX multiplayer; Championship Manager 2008 & Ballistic Weapons mod for UT2004. I wonder if editing CM2008's player database is considered modding?
Wow, send this to EA!!! Of course we are Moddb, but with a little more awareness about modding we would see the same demographic outside our little elitist club, too!
For me it depends entirely on the game or mod in question.
Some games such as the CNC series have a history of interesting and different mods. :)
The biggest advantage of PC gaming, IMO, is mods and their potenital.
@SinKing: Haha, if only EA would listen. Then they might start releasing the full non beta versions of the game SDKS, (Software development kits) and map builders. :)
I generally buy a game, play it to death, and then after a long time peroid, find some good mods for it.
In my experience a modder is just someone who plays a game and realises that the game has flaws and that they could make the game better. Sometimes this is a smaller balance based mod that changes the stats of weapons. Sometimes this is a bigger mod that re adds things cut from the original game. And sometimes this is a total conversion mod that completely changes the original game into something new.
Indie games!
Of course I would say that.
I don't have a large library of commercial games, so I can't even play half the mods. I can, however, play any indie title that shows up. :)

AHAHAHAHA
Hello, MODDB!
Jesus, people...
The worst thing, I'm one of you :D
What are you talking? mods are right behind commercial games.
I mostly buy a commercial game and play it while, then I start looking for some cool mods and usually I play them way longer than the vanilla game.
Same here.. or sometimes I buy a commercial game just for some mods. But I play commercial games a little more.
I don't take chances before I get assured that the stuff I'm buying is indeed good.
'Play commercial games that are 9.0+ and play mods that seem to be equally as good.
Well then it's easy to miss out on great games that don't get a 9+, because I have played many - I assure you...
It's like others say - I play Commercial games first - then I look for great mods to make it better than before...
i buy comercial games SOLELY to play mods generally (except for the battlefield series)
how is it that with some comm. games something better and more playable gets released by a nobody, wtf, E.G. "user made L4D careers" and "research and development"
now mods are at the top
Probably the reason "Dead Before Dawn" won the best unreleased mod...
Mods by a long shot, because I'm a cheap bastard and proud of it! :D
Mods... including mods gone commercial like CS and DOD.

I mostly play commerical games,i am a Teamfortress 2 addict but play mods when i spot a good one
I have a ton of games i finished and i only ever play mods of them now. Mods 100% sure.
mods nothing else, and if you are working on a mod self and you get a gr8 feedback thats always nice ;)
xD hablen en espaƱol joder... saludos a fireken! xP
Mods, if that includes mods that has later gone commercial! :D
Hard to choose. I picked mods, but a lot of mods I play have gone commercial. I enjoy any type of game though, as long as it's fun.
Hmm, I voted mods, But i really mean both mods and indie games.

Mods and commercial FTW!
Commercial Games though i do like trying out mods when they're available.
Hm, i would like to paly more indies and mods, but there still is only a little support of thses, so i will have to play commercials on and on.
Commercial games for story, mods and indie games for bonus gameplay features, if you get what I mean.
Commercial, although it was a hard choice between Mods and Commercial...
Same for me. You can't have a mod without a commercial, at least most of the time. I enjoy playing Vietnam | Glory Obscured and Battlefield Vietnam just as much as each other and ones a mod and ones a commercial...
Old games.. :)
Pretty much only commercial games.
L4d, RE, TF2, etc.
Commerical Games!

Play 1 game at a time. Yea I know.
So if I play mod like Natural Selection I'm a pro. But then I stopped so now I have nothing to play.
Considering the amount of time I spend playing Insurgency and Garry's Mod I'd say mods... wait, but does Gmod count as a commercial game because I bought it? And what does that classify DoD:S and CSS as?
Hands down, commercial.
50/50 on commercial games & mods. Currently playing Halo 2 & HAWX multiplayer; Championship Manager 2008 & Ballistic Weapons mod for UT2004. I wonder if editing CM2008's player database is considered modding?
Mods all the way :) You buy the official game (or in the case of valve a source game) and you get access to a 100 more games
I play HL2-mods 99% of my game-time.
Play 'em all!
But especially don't forget to play the mods!
TF2!!!!!!!!!
But I also play HL2 mods and IG:Warlord :)
Commercial 45% and Mods 45% :O

oh snap, its 45%/45% for mods and commercial games. seems about right thoug, as imo, mods are supplements and or enhancements to the commercial games.
mods FTW!
:D
hmmmmm, odd that it adds up to 101% right now.....
45+10+45+1=101.....
I saw this too and I went 'WTF?'
But mods can be fun some times...
