I usually look for at least a map editor, which my latest purchase, Advance Wars, has. I think it only took me 24 hours to blast out a map (which reminds me, I need to upload it to Moddb).
Sometimes I'll buy a game mostly for the mods. HL and HL2 put out SUPERB mods. For Dystopia, Empires, Insurgency, Iron Grip: The Opression, and soon Eternal Silence 2 beta 3, I would easily pay 5 times the amount that Valve set HL2DM at. When I bought Battlefield 1942, I bought it solely for Desert Combat and Galactic Conquest. All in all, agreeing with what everybody else said, mods heavily increase the value of a game, and in some cases, actually make it worth buying.
Ya exactly. If you get a game you want to do something else with it. Not just one or two playthrews. You got to have more things to do. For example, MODifications to the game.
I would say that re-playability is foremost in my mind when buying a game rather than modding... I usually mod for the Unreal series of games but it takes ages to actually make stuff.
Also, may be it's a sign of a better game that gets it right the first time round rather than one that needs to be constantly altered by it end users.
heck no! How many games get modded now a days? UT, BF & Half Life. there's a 99% change any other game you buy will have nothing done with it. A 1% change something WILL be done with it even if there is a SDK.
It's like asking me if I only buy steaks if I feel like marinating them.
It only influence my decision when there are already good-looking mods made or in progress for the game.
The fact that the game "can be modded" don't do it in itself.
I'll be buying Crysis down the track, mostly for Mechwarrior: Living Legends. I bought the orange box primarily for mods and TF2.
I'm fairly picky when it comes to buying games. If I can't see the potential for a decent amount of user-created content, it's likely that I'll pass. A single experience for $80-$100AUD? No thanks.
Stuff like Oblivion is given life by mods. I have 5gb of mods for that game. around the same amount of custom stuff for source engine.
Look at Warcraft III - this game's online community is probably mostly populated by DotA games: a heavily modified map. Modding breathes new life into games which can otherwise get old quickly.
I bought Crysis just for Mechwarrior too, I haven't even bothered to play it yet. I will one but MODS and the capability of modding most definitely influence me...
i bought UT3 purely for the tools...i stopped buying COD games after how pathetic the SDKs became with cod2 onwards...although i got cod4 after my gears of war purchase was on a broken dvd...i dunno mostly i look for gameplay value (total war series is a good example) but with fps games i always go for things i can mod.
That's why I picked up the Orange Box so fast. You're not just buying those games, you're buying the TONS OF MODS that come with it. It greatly lengthens its value.
i strongly agree, when you buy a game heavily modded, its like buying about 2000 games in one(hl2) insane...always something to do...you can buy hl2 and laste it 1 year...mine lasted about 6 months and going further...a mmorpg game lasts 1 day for me,lol ut3 lasted 2 days as i didnt had high speed internet to download mods!
hummm wow about 1 month...
Usually only moddable games. There are exceptions but usually if you can't mod the beast it won't take long until it catches dust in your cupboard... especially since mods tend to bring back the creativity the games itself lack most of the time :(
wow ive never been in the presence of a genuine rebel before! Yeah stick it to the man! or whatever it is you devilishly hip teenagers get up to these days
I only download games I already have (on a different platform) or that I wouldn't buy anyways... and if I see it for a budget price... surely, I'll buy it. I spend thousand euros per year on games easily ^^
Does the ability to mod factor into my purchasing decision? Yeah, it does, I really enjoy mods, and that's pretty much why I bought UT3. For the mods, and to mod it.
Mods keep many old games alive and yes it's fun to play your old games with a lot more new features. I remember I bought Red Alert 2 7! years ago and still play with many mods and it's still as much fun as it was in the past.
So yes I almost always buy games that can be modded.
The Problem with this poll is that this opinion which is represented here is not objective. Because the people who were asked here are all fans of mods. Of course is the ability to mod or add user-generated content a factor in our purchasing decision. :D
I think when you create this poll on a simple gaming-site perhaps you get a complete different result.
agreeded, it'd be interesting to see how many of the people who buy games based upon the modding capabilities own/play console games. but i guess the argument would be that console games dont count because they're not 'real' gaming or some similar, tired old cliche to that extent.
I am generally more attracted to games with mod capabilities, but at the end of the day i buy a game because I like the game. The Monkey Island Series has never had any modding but I'd still choose to play those over any number of titles which do.
This poll doesn't really fit this site that much, every user on the site is looking forward to mods, therefore they are buying games that allow mods to be used onto them. It's silly.
But as for myself, I'm say no. I see more to a game then buying it just because you can mod it. I rather get a ame because I want to play it, tis why I have a massive DS game collection.
hl1 and hl2 wouldn't be as big without mods, some game I dont expect much modding but some game like crysis, and unreal I want to get my hands on their editors.
Mods just quite simply increase value of the game bought without mods a game would still be worth buying if the gameitself was really good. But why not also include the ability to extend the value of that game with mods. game designers need to realise that they need to offer thier consumers more choice after all, these games are like £40 pounds each. then this game developers want to complain why poeple pirate games. well the answers are obvious. also i could write for ever but i cant b bothered. LOL!!!!
The only game I've ever bought for its modding potential alone was Half-Life 2. Half-Life 1 was the game that really got me into playing mods, and I knew Half-Life 2 would be just as good, if not better for that reason. Although I knew I would enjoy the game (Half-Life 2) itself, I was more interested in Counter-Strike: Source and all the mods that I knew people would make for it. But I don't think I would spend money on a game for it's modding potential alone unless I liked the base game at least a little bit and was very confident that people were indeed going to make (and finish) good mods for it.
I have however bought games for the sole purpose of playing mods for it that were already out or in production. As for buying games that aren't at all moddable, (or games that people just aren't making mods for) I have no problem spending money on them if I really enjoy the base game itself.
It's hardly worth buying if you're going to play it once then leave it on the shelf.
i strongly agree with that comment!
without mods i wouldn't even touch these games, and mods are really something fun to play with!
Agree.
I usually look for at least a map editor, which my latest purchase, Advance Wars, has. I think it only took me 24 hours to blast out a map (which reminds me, I need to upload it to Moddb).
i also agree!! it gets boring playing a game again and again after awhile.it would be so COOL!!! if you could mod x box and ps2 and so on

ahahah ah, something tells me Stenchy used this idea from a productive source ;)
But yes, make your cash count!
I have no idea what you're talking about :P
I only buy moddable games nowadays, anything that isn't is most likely oem-bundled i didn't ask for
Half-life 1 i bought just becouse of Sven Coop
(i already had it but not on steam).
you do know u can add games to your steam account :P
Well he knows that NOW.
I haven't bought a game that isn't 'indie' or likely moddable in years.
heck no! How many games get modded now a days? UT, BF & Half Life. there's a 99% change any other game you buy will have nothing done with it. A 1% change something WILL be done with it even if there is a SDK.

more like noddles...you GOT to put something with it or the taste wont last...or wont be any..
It only influence my decision when there are already good-looking mods made or in progress for the game.

Why not this just be something along the lines of. :P
Do you purchase EA Games Often ?
Usually only moddable games. There are exceptions but usually if you can't mod the beast it won't take long until it catches dust in your cupboard... especially since mods tend to bring back the creativity the games itself lack most of the time :(
at least add lua modding
(buried)
Doesn't matter much in my decision since I never buy my games.
Yeah yeah, it's not nice to rip of the creators and blah blah but it's what I do. Going to stop me?
Enjoy your lack of multiplayer.
wow ive never been in the presence of a genuine rebel before!
If you're going to buy some game... play it, mod it! :) Not leave it in the closet full of spiders and bugs.
yes.... I like to keep my closet stocked with other games...
Does the ability to mod factor into my purchasing decision? Yeah, it does, I really enjoy mods, and that's pretty much why I bought UT3. For the mods, and to mod it.
But I still buy some games that can't be modded.
All the studios whose games I still buy are moddable and mod community friendly.
not modable equals not worth buying in most cases.
There are exceptions though

True, that's the funny part :P

The poll would also be better if the developers and publishers of non-moddable actually read it.
Nudepatch :P
It's why I got the Orange Box :)
the only reason i buy the is for the mods !
Absolutely!
I wasn't absolutely keen on Frontlines: Fuel of War, but when I heard that it would be modder friendly, that swayed me.
This poll doesn't really fit this site that much, every user on the site is looking forward to mods, therefore they are buying games that allow mods to be used onto them. It's silly.
But as for myself, I'm say no. I see more to a game then buying it just because you can mod it. I rather get a ame because I want to play it, tis why I have a massive DS game collection.
ds games are the rock and staple of my gaming days :P
hl1 and hl2 wouldn't be as big without mods, some game I dont expect much modding but some game like crysis, and unreal I want to get my hands on their editors.
Yes, but the only reason to create mods, is: play another thing in the same game
Mods just quite simply increase value of the game bought without mods a game would still be worth buying if the gameitself was really good.
