Noone will want to play it for more than a few days, no matter how innovating the concept is.
I can agree with that. Even though some mods may be the most creative ever concieved, they may just end up as mere gimmicks. If the gameplay can make use of that creativity, no matter how gimmicky it may seem, it'll be a fantastic mod.
To me though, crativity, gameplay, atmosphere and more importantly storyline go hand in hand. If a team of modders could implement all of those elements together then their mod will surely stand out amongst the others. Nothing worse than having your design conflict and contradict everything that you've stated with your story.
It's a blast from the past! This is based off of one of the first polls to ever grace this site, all the way back in August of 2002. I wanted to see how tastes and preferences have changed over the years to the burgeoning mod community that graces the present. What do you guys believe is the most important part of any mod, as your first priority? Be honest now. ;)
I honestly do believe in atmosphere and creativity as key points, but the storyline will always be something most important to me. Character development is a must in my opinion, and allows the player to feel connected to the experience in more ways than just as a floating object running around with a gun in their hands. Give me personality! That's what I say.
Creativity, storyline, atmosphere, realism (or more specifically, believability) and above all GAMEPLAY! But to be honest, you need all of those things for a truly great mod. And story doesn't just mean single-player. Story can be as simple as context for a multiplayer scenario.
I wanted to say creativity, but to be honest, a creative mod with bad gameplay is short lived.

However, a mod with great gameplay doesn't need anything else.
Creativity, graphics, weapons, realism?
A luxury, all you really need is gameplay.
Well I'd go for Gameplay....and I mean seriously, you got to have Gameplay, and for me good gameplay needs to come with
a good story(If any at all, of course).
I think however, that atmosphere is more important sometimes..... For an example: FEAR, If there wouldn't be any
atmosphere that game would be completely useless...
Creativity dosen't really matter
For mods, I believe it is creativity. We don't need generic shooters. Mods are a flexible medium in this respect, as you don't have to worry about money in commercial marketing. Be creative, then who knows? You may have The Next Best Thing(TM).
I think it should be good gameplay and creativity, with out good gameplay you wont have a good mod, with out creativity, you still wont have a good mod. so it's literaly a juggling act when your modding.
Realism affects how the game operates, maps affect how the game is played, creativity is expressed in the gameplay, big friggin weapons are part of the ameplay, etc etc
Not necessarily, KingTurd. For example, the gameplay could be fun, but the storyline could be lacking (i.e. Gears of War). Same can be said about the creativity of that gameplay, the atmosphere involved with it, the realism...
Basically, this is what you hold the top priority. :)
RIGHT ON xro!!!! Gameplay and BIG FRIGGEN WEAPONS!! (which complements gameplay ;)
Also, creativity complements gameplay too! Without creativity gameplay is left dull!
Creativity without a doubt. What if everyone just made slight modifications to say, HL2, and repackaged them as mods? Sure, the gameplay is good but it's just been done before. So yeah, creativity all the way.
Creativity is most important: A great gameplay without anything new is just a copy. Maps influence gameplay and atmosphere but they are only a part of it. The only things that are NOT any important at all are "Big Friggin Weapons", realism and a storyline. Small weapons, fictional and unrealistic mods and multiplayer mods (without a story) can be very good.
Creativity, in my mind. You could have a mod with no weapons and zero realism and the mod would be still great if it were creative.
Followed closely by gameplay, atmosphere and storyline. Then again, I'm more a single player type so I guess storyline wouldn't matter to muliplayer types. Single player does need a strong story though.
For me it has to be Creativity. It forms the basis for Gameplay and Atmosphere. Look at Killer7, for example. It's gameplay and visual style was born from Suda51's and Grasshoppers' creativity.
chalk one up for the big friggin weapons
Nice community, good graphics and something historical!
I was going to say teamplay
Gameplay is to wide theres hundreds of aspects in that.
Meant to click Gameplay, but my mouse slipped and I clicked realism
Woe :(

creativity & big friggin weapons ftw xD

And just where is GRAPHIKS and PERTICAL AFFECTS!?!?

z0mg!!!1
BIG FRICKIN' GUNZ!!!!!!!
I think they're all really important, but I chose storyline
That goes hand in hand with atmosphere. Graphics and particle effects take part in that (or lack of certain parts).
all about the gameplay. if it dont play well, it wont do well. now my mod will get a X2 in gameplay.
Creativity too... its tough to pick!
Getting the mod done and released is pretty important too ;)
Creativity for sure.
Creativity, you need it before you can have the others.

I like the mod that changes the way the game plays either slightly or completly...and BIG FRIGGIN GUNZ
I choose gameplay, but only because there was no "a popular liscense rip-off" option.
It's al about the Creativity and Gameplay that's all the Big keys for a great game/mod

dont all of those basically make up gameplay?

D;
Hectoliters of blood... Unfortunately.

Of course poorly designed maps can ruin even the greatest gameplay concepts.
Im not going to vote for gameplay because that is a given. What matters is the Creativity that FUELS gameplay.
A good mod have every thing balanced.
Strategy and Skill. YEA!
Forgot one thing to vote on. FRIGGIN' IRON SIGHTS!!!!! :P
BIG FRIGGIN' GUNS OF COURSE! >:D
As a developer, I easily choose Atmosphere.
It draws you in.
Obviously then you need great gameplay and great maps to keep them there.
Creativity though is a maybe. As long as you can do something and do it right, then you'll get attention.
Gameplay makes great games, but then creativity makes good mods off of the already good games
Game play, creativity, and big friggin weapons. All in that order.
Sorry, but how can anyone choose anything over Gameplay? without gameplay, it isn't a game, it's a pretty (or often ugly) picture.
Game play and creativity! woot!
RIGHT ON xro!!!! Gameplay and BIG FRIGGEN WEAPONS!! (which complements gameplay ;)
Also, creativity complements gameplay too! Without creativity gameplay is left dull!
Gameplay ALWAYS friggin good gameplay makes a GREAT MOD XD
If that's not the priority then the game will flounder.
There's an age old rule of thumb. Great graphics = Crap Gameplay and vice versa.
Creativity without a doubt. What if everyone just made slight modifications to say, HL2, and repackaged them as mods? Sure, the gameplay is good but it's just been done before. So yeah, creativity all the way.
I doubt the truthfulness of that rule of thumb...
to me its all about realism, gameplay, atmosphere, and storyline

For some reason "atmosphere" is the total of graphics, gameplay and creativity. So I voted for that. :/
Half Life 2 had great grfx and great gameplay
and although it didnt feature dynamic lighting and shadows the grfx designs were still spot on
Creativity, in my mind. You could have a mod with no weapons and zero realism and the mod would be still great if it were creative.

mines "realism" some mods have good pics
